Provenance Galerie Gmurzynska, Cologne; Private possession, Switzerland Alica Halicka, the daughter of a Jewish doctor, was born in 1894 in Krakow and subsequently grew up in Switzerland and Austria. In 1912 she moved to Paris, where she studied with Paul Sérusier and Maurice Denis at the Académie Ranson and under Fernand Cormon. In Paris she also met Louis Marcoussis, whom she married in 1913. Their daughter Malène was born in 1922. Through Marcoussis, Halicka joined the circle of Cubists, to which she belonged until 1921, before her works increasingly approached Surrealism.
