Dans les croyances de l’île de Mangaia, de tels objets n’étaient pas considérés comme de simples outils, mais comme des ruatangaeo, c’est-à-dire des descendants de divinités sculptées. Le terme ruatangaeo signifie littéralement « nid de martin-pêcheur », une appellation poétique faisant référence aux ouvertures carrées caractéristiques percées dans le manche. Le raffinement esthétique du ruatangaeo souligne son rôle d’instrument spirituel. Au-delà de leur fonction cérémonielle, ces herminettes étaient investies d’un véritable pouvoir sur les forces de la nature : on croyait qu’en obstruant symboliquement toutes les ouvertures du piédestal, un prêtre pouvait « lier » les vents et apaiser les tempêtes, assurant ainsi la sécurité des pêcheurs en mer. Les fins motifs répétitifs en « dents de requin » (tiki tiki tangata) qui couvrent la surface de l’objet agissent comme une forme d’invocation visuelle, renforçant son association à la protection des ancêtres et à la puissance divine. In Mangaian belief, such objects were not merely tools but were regarded as ruatangaeo—descendants of carved deities. The term ruatangaeo translates literally as “kingfisher’s nest,” a poetic reference to the distinctive square apertures piercing the haft. The aesthetic refinement of the ruatangaeo underscores its role as a spiritual instrument. Beyond their ceremonial display, these adzes were believed to possess profound ecological agency: by symbolically plugging all the openings in the pedestal, a priest could “bind” the winds and quell violent storms, thereby ensuring the safety of fishermen at sea. The fine, repetitive “shark-tooth” patterns (tiki tiki tangata) covering the surface function as a visual litany, reinforcing the object’s association with ancestral protection and divine power.
