Cette catégorie d’objet est considérée comme «masse d’arme» car certains exemplaires furent retrouvés avec leur tête de masse. Ces armes contondantes n’en demeuraient pas moins des objets à haute valeur symbolique. Son origine est à resituer parmi les influences de la Mésopotamie et de l’Asie dans la Civilisation de Bactriane où la massue est fréquemment associée aux notions de création et de fécondité. G. Liebert (Liebert 1974:67) y voit un rapport direct avec le culte de Mithra. Mithra est le dieu du Contrat, responsable de l’accord passé entre dieu et les hommes.
