He was a famous painter and art historian in the era of Qianlong and Jiaqing. His landscapes and figure paintings in particular were expressive and lively. In 1781 he wrote a 4-volume book Jiezhou xuhua bian 芥舟学画编 about the theory of painting. He wrote: Therefore it is crucial that the complete idea comes from the heart of the artist, so that the execution of the painting, which realizes spontaneously finesse and density, brightness and darkness, weakness and strength as well as virtuality and sincerity swipes through the universe. Only by considering all these aspects the paintings reach superior quality. Condition: The work shows signs of wear consistent with age. Tears are restored.
