Der ungarische Landschaftsmaler István Csók (1865-1961) studierte zunächst an der Zeichenschule in Budapest bevor er sich an der Münchner Kunstakademie weiterbildete. Anschließend ging er nach Paris, wo er durch die Avantgardisten maßgebliche Inspiration erfuhr und er den malerischen Realismus hinter sich ließ. Zurück in Budapest fand er zu einem markanten post-impressionistischen Stil, der ihn zu einem der populärsten Künstler der ungarischen Moderne macht. Insbesondere seine Akte und die Landschaften werden von heutigen Sammlern geschätzt. Das vorliegende Gemälde ist in die reife Schaffensphase des Künstlers einzuordnen. In seiner farbenfrohen Interpretation des mythologischen 'Leda und der Schwan' Motivs zeigt sich Csóks individuelle Handschrift. Die Szene eines weiblichen Aktes mit Pfau wurde wohl am sommerlichen Balaton arrangiert, eines der Lieblingsmotive des Künstlers. In der bewussten Missachtung kompositorischer Konventionen ist es ein charakteristisches Werk der jungen Moderne. Farben werden lebensfroh kontrastiert - rotes Haar mit grünen Wiesen und blauem Wasser - und im Kolorit des Pfaus schillernd zusammengeführt. The Hungarian landscapist István Csók (1865-1961) began his education at the drawing school of Budapest before continuing his studies at the Munich academy of arts. After that he went to Paris where he was greatly influenced by the avant-gardists, inspiring him to overcome pictorial realism. Back in Budapest he found his distinctive post-impressionistic style, which makes him one of the most popular artists of Hungarian modern art.Valued by present-day collectors in particular are his nudes and landscapes. The offered painting dates in the artist`s mature creative phase. In its colourful interpretation of the mythological 'Leda and the Swan' motif it represents Csók`s individual stylistic signature. The scene of a female nude with peacock was likely arranged at lake Balaton in summer, one of the artist`s favorit motifs. In its intentional disregard of compositional conventions it is a characteristic work of the young modern era. Colours are cheerfully contrasted - read hair with green lawn and blue water - and united in the peacock`s dazzling shades.
