L'œuvre entière de Jean Pougny est exemplaire de son incessante recherche créative, dans pratiquement tous les mouvements et les écoles artistiques des vingt-cinq premières années du XXe siècle. Très vite dans sa carrière, pendant les années agitées de 1912-1916, Pougny, avec Malevich, Tatlin et Larionov, fut le fer de lance du mouvement Futuriste russe, juste avant la révolution. Ce tableau, intitulé Bain, était inclus dans l'exposition Futuriste “0.10“ de Petrograd en 1916. Un article de presse explique que : “dans la théorie du Futurisme et du Cubo-futurisme, proclament leur adeptes, les objets sont cassés, transformés, reconstruits. Cette conception mène le peintre vers la destruction de l'Art Figuratif.“ (Herman Beninger et Jean-Albert Cartier, Jean Pougny, Tome I, p. 65). Bain fut exposé à un moment critique pour Pougny et l'avant-garde russe. C'est une œuvre typique des premières natures mortes de Pougny. L'artiste décompose les éléments en formes géométriques simples. Les ombres et les aplats de couleurs qui s'entrecroisent donnent un mouvement général à l'ensemble. Cette nature morte est tout sauf morte. Les objets semblent sortir de la toile pour une rencontre, une danse avec le spectateur. Dès 1915, la nature morte s'impose dans l'œuvre de l'artiste, lui servant de terrain d'exploration pour ses idées. Jean Pougny's entire œuvre reflects an incessant creative search, touching practically all major art movements and schools that emerged in the first quarter of the 20th century. Early in his artistic career, during the tumultuous years 1912-1916 just before the revolution, Pougny, together with Malevich, Tatlin and Larionov, was at the helm of the Russian Futurist movement. Our painting, entitled Bath, was exhibited in the pioneering Futurist exhibit “0.10,” in Petrograd, in 1916. A press excerpt reveals, “In the theory of Futurism and Cubo-Futurism, proclaim their followers, objects are broken, transformed, reconstructed. This conception pushes the painter to the destruction of Figurative Art.” (Herman Beninger and Jean-Albert Cartier, Jean Pougny, Tome I, p. 65). Bath was first shown at a critical turning-point for Pougny and the Russian avant-garde. Bath, is an excellent example of Jean Pougny's approach to his early still lives. The artist is beginning to decompose the elements into layers of simple geometrical forms. The shadows and intersecting color planes convey a sense of movement to everything on the canvas: this still life is nothing but still. The objects seem to jump off the surface, engaging in a lively interplay, or dance, both with each other and the viewer. The still life had begun to dominate the artist's œuvre as early as 1915, when he began transforming this humble genre into a testing ground for his ideas.
