Oil/canvas, 49 x 67 cm, lo. ri. sign. Ruisdael, retouchings, relined.
Main exponent of Dutch landscape painting, nephew of Salomon van Ruysdael. R. was taught painting in the studio of his father Salomon. Since 1648 he was member of the Haarlem St. Luke's guild. He travelled Germany a. the Netherlands in company of N. Berchem who sometimes painted the figures in R.s landscapes. R.s importance for landscape painting can't be underestimated, he influenced the genre well through the 19th cent. Museum: St. Petersburg (Hermitage), Amsterdam (Rijksmus.), Vienna (Kunsthist.
