JAGUAR 340 (1968) TELAIO N. 1J/80195DN MOTORE: 6 CILINDRI IN LINEA, BIALBERO CILINDRATA: 3400 CM3 POTENZA: 210 CV CARROZZERIA: BERLINA Nei primi anni ’50 la Jaguar –sotto l’abile guida di Sir William Lyons- si trasformò da piccolo specialista in una vera e propria industria automobilistica. La chiave di questo sviluppo fu il formidabile motore XK, progettato durante la guerra e lanciato nel 1948, e la linea di berline compatte. Questa linea fu inaugurata dalla “2,4 litri” del 1955 poi chiamata retroattivamente ‘Mk I’ dopo l’uscita della ‘MK II’ nel 1959. La MkII, prodotta con motorizzazioni da 2400, 3400 e 3800 cm3, ebbe un grande successo, tanto da essere prodotta in totale in 82.208 esemplari. La vettura qui proposta fa parte della serie finale delle MkII, ed era denominata più semplicemente ‘340’: prodotta solo dal 1967 al 1969, la 340 si fermò a 2.655 esemplari, ed è quindi una delle più rare versioni della berlina compatta di Coventry. La MkII rappresenta senz’altro uno dei più amati capolavori di Sir William Lyons. Con questa macchina, Lyons aveva reinventato la Berlina Sportiva. Certo c’erano già state molte vetture degne di questa definizione, ma la MkII riuscì a coniugare le piccole dimensioni (era lunga 4,59 metri) con una buona abitabilità e prestazioni per l’epoca eccezionali, grazie ai suoi poderosi motori a sei cilindri e doppio albero. Grazie a queste qualità, la MkII si fece onore in tantissime competizioni stradali, il Rally di Monte Carlo e il Tour de France tra tutte, e in pista. La serie finale, di cui questa vettura fa parte, fu proposta solo con le cilindrate 2400 e 3400, con la denominazione appunto 240 e 340. Nella migliore tradizione di tutte le Case automobilistiche, quando un modello sta avvicinandosi alla fine della produzione, si cerca di dare uno stimolo alle vendite offrendo una versione di fine serie ad un prezzo più conveniente. Nel caso della MkII questo fu ottenuto semplificando alcune finiture come i paraurti e l’ebanisteria interna, e soprattutto dotando le vetture di un interno in finta pelle. Queste caratteristiche però rimasero in pratica limitate al mercato inglese delle vendite a flotte: nei mercati di esportazione come l’Italia, dove i numeri erano bassi e la distribuzione era gestita privatamente, venne mantenuto lo stesso livello di prezzo e le vetture venivano ordinate con tutti gli optional, riportandole praticamente al livello di allestimento precedente. Questa vettura, oltre all’interno in pelle, ha perfino l’Overdrive e l’aria condizionata! Negli anni ’60 la Jaguar in Italia era una vettura rarissima: per capirci nel 1965, ‘66 e ‘67 si vendettero circa 260 Jaguar all’anno, nel 1968 solo 190 e nel 1969 561. Quindi la vettura qui proposta fa parte dell’anno in cui le Jaguar vendute in Italia toccarono il minimo storico, dopo il 1960. Già questo fatto la rende molto particolare e rara, ma la storia di questa vettura ne fa un oggetto veramente unico: essa fu acquistata da un giovanotto milanese che la usò e la mantenne per più di quarant’anni, per poi cederla ad un amico che l’aveva ammirata a lungo. Trasferita in una splendida tenuta nel Chianti, la Jaguar veniva usata saltuariamente in occasioni speciali. In tutti questi anni, e con due soli proprietari, essa ha percorso meno di 68.000 chilometri. Si tratta quindi di una opportunità unica di aggiudicarsi una vettura totalmente originale, avendo avuto solo due proprietari ed essendo sempre stata mantenuta impeccabilmente. E’ stata portata a Firenze da chi scrive e la vettura ha dimostrato di essere in gran forma: il motore gira benissimo, il cambio è perfetto (è il 4 marce Jaguar con sincronizzatori e Overdrive a comando elettrico) e i freni rispondono bene. Si tratta di una vettura che, dopo un accurato tagliando, sarà pronta per affrontare qualsiasi prova. La vettura è in ottime condizioni meccaniche ma, non essendo stata usata negli ultimi tre anni, per sicurezza consigliamo all’acquirente di sottoporla a un controllo e di sostituire i fluidi, i filtri e particolari deperibili. Key to this development was the remarkable XK engine designed during the war and launched in 1948, and the line of compact saloons. This line was inaugurated by the “2.4 litre” version in 1955 which was then retroactively called the ‘Mk I’ following the release of the ‘MK II’ in 1959. The Mk II, produced with 2400, 3400 and 3800 cc. engines, was a great success, to the extent that a total of 82,208 examples were produced. The vehicle proposed here is part of the final series of the Mk II, and was more simply called the ‘340’. Only produced from 1967 to 1969, the 340 stopped at 2,655 units and is therefore one of the rarest versions of the compact saloon from Coventry. As a result of these qualities, the Mk II distinguished itself in many competitions on the road - the Monte Carlo Rally and Tour de France amongst others - and on the track. The final series, of which this vehicle is part, was only offered with displacements of 2400 and 3400, and thus called the 240 and 340. In the best tradition of all car manufacturers, towards the end of production, an attempt is made to boost sales by offering an end of series version at a more economic price. In the case of the Mk II this was achieved by simplifying some of the finishes like the bumpers and interior woodwork and, above all, by equipping the vehicles with an imitation leather interior. However, in practice, these characteristics were limited to the British market of fleet sales: in export markets like Italy, where the numbers were lower and the distribution was managed privately, the vehicles were ordered with all the options, basically bringing them back to the previous level of finishing. This vehicle, in addition to the leather interior, even has the Overdrive and air conditioning! Jaguars were very rare in Italy in the 1960s: just think that in 1965, 1966 and 1967 around 260 Jaguars were sold per year, in 1968 just 190, and 561 in 1969. So the vehicle proposed here belongs to the year in which the number of Jaguars sold in Italy was at a historic low, after 1960. This fact already makes it very special and rare, but the story of this vehicle makes it a truly unique object: it was purchased by a young man from Milan who used and maintained the car for over forty years and then sold it to a friend who had long admired it. After moving to a splendid estate in the Chianti district, the Jaguar was only used on special occasions. It therefore represents a unique opportunity to obtain a totally original car which has only had two owners and has always been impeccably maintained. I myself drove it to Florence and the vehicle was in great shape: the engine turns over very well, the gearbox is perfect (it is the 4 gear Jaguar box with synchro and Overdrive) and the brakes respond well. It is a vehicle that, after an attentive service, will be ready to face any test. The vehicle is in excellent mechanical condition but since it has not been used for the last three years, for safety reasons, we advise the purchaser to have it checked over and to replace the fluids, filters and perishable elements.
