Von dieser ungewöhnlichen Darstellung der "Anbetung der Heiligen Drei Könige" sind vier weitere Fassungen bekannt, und zwar in Utrecht, Centraal Museum, im Catharijneconvent der gleichen Stadt, in einer römischen Privatsammlung und in der National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (Abbildungen im RKD Den Haag). Obwohl davon keine als eigenhändiges Werk des Jan van Scorel anerkannt wird, wird die figurenreiche Bilderfindung diesem Utrechter Maler zugeschrieben. Wir danken Molly Ann Faries für diese Auskünfte. Sie hält die Fassung in Dublin (93,3 x 74,8 cm) für die Variante, die Jan van Scorel stilistisch am nächsten steht und bei der eine Unterzeichnung von Scorels Hand möglich ist. Ebenso möglich ist in ihren Augen, dass unser Bild aus der Werkstatt Scorels stammt. Nach der Wahl des Utrechter Kardinals Boeyens 1522 zum Papst, der als Adrian VI. den Petersthron bestieg, reiste Scorel noch im gleichen Jahr nach Rom. Er wurde von seinem Landsmann sofort zum Aufseher der Antiken-Sammlungen im Belvedere ernannt. Welche Faszination die antiken Ruinen auf den gerade Zweiundzwanzigjährigen ausübten, lässt sich auch bei dieser Komposition erkennen. Denn er verlegt die biblische Anbetung an einen Ort, der das römische Forum sein könnte, und zwar teils unter- und teils oberirdisch. So findet die eigentliche Anbetungsszene in einem scheinbar gerade ausgegrabenem Ziegelstein-Gewölbe statt, während die weitere Szenerie mit Säulentempel, Amphitheater und Triumphbogen den oberirdischen Ruinen der römischen Hauptstadt gleicht. Four other versions are known to exist of this unusual depiction of the Adoration of the Magi, these are kept in the Centraal Museum and the Catharijneconvent in Utrecht, in a Roman private collection and in the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin (illustrated in the RKD, the Hague). Although none of the works were painted by Jan van Scorel himself, the densely populated composition is nevertheless attributed to this Utrecht painter. Mrs Faries also considers it possible that the present work was painted in Scorel's studio. Following the Utrecht Cardinal Boeyen's ascension of the papal throne as Pope Adrian VI in 1522, Scorel travelled to Rome in the same year. There, his countryman immediately appointed him as overseer of the Belvedere antiquities collection. The 22 year old painter's fascination for ancient ruins is clearly evident in the present work. He has placed the biblical adoration scene in a location which could be the Roman forum. The work shows architecture above and below ground, with the adoration scene taking place in what appears to be an excavated brick vault surrounded by scenery with a temple, amphitheatre and triumphal arch reminiscent of the ruins of the Italian capital.
