Son écriture picturale évolue vers une figuration linéaire néo-cubiste. Malgré cette évolution qui l'éloigne du Cubisme, il reste lié avec son marchand Léonce Rosenberg qui achète en 1922 la Nature morte aux champignons, continue de collaborer au Bulletin de l'Effort moderne, et participe à la troisième exposition de la Section d'Or à la galerie Vavin-Raspail en 1925, avec trois tableaux dont un Paysage de 1924. En cette période de grande stabilité pour lui et de maturité certaine, il peint de nombreuses natures mortes, dont la fréquence doit être liée à la présence de son élève, Suzanne Phocas, devenue son épouse en 1925. Cette Nature morte, qui n'est pas datée, peut être rapprochée de la Nature morte au vase noir de 1926 (fig. 1). Leurs compositions sont identiques : divers objets, fruits ou légumes rassemblés sur une table, ici carrée, composent la nature morte ; l'ensemble est disposé dans un espace clos aux murs lambrissés. Dans les deux cas, Metzinger a joué l'opposition entre la nature morte elle-même, avec ses lignes courbes et ses volumes, et les surfaces planes rectilignes qui l'entourent. Plus aucune fragmentation, ni construction complexe, mais une volonté de contraste sous l'influence naissante de Fernand Léger a conduit la main de Jean Metzinger dans ce magifique tableau. JEAN METZINGER NATURE MORTE After having sung the glories of Cubism with the 1912 publication of Du “ Cubisme” in collaboration with Albert Gleizes, in 1918 Jean Metzinger began the second period of his life as a painter. His pictorial style evolved towards a linear, neo-Cubist representational style. In spite of this development, which was to distance him from Cubism, he continued to work with his art dealer, Léonce Rosenberg, who purchased Nature morte aux champignons in 1922, continued to contribute to the Bulletin de l'Effort moderne, and participated in the third exhibit of the Section d'Or at the Vavin-Raspail gallery in 1925 with three paintings, including a Paysage from 1924. During this period of considerable stability as well as a certain personal maturity, he painted many still-lifes with a frequency connected to the presence of a student, Suzanne Phocas, who became his wife in 1925. This Nature morte, which is not dated, appears to be related to Nature morte au vase noir from 1926 (fig. 1). They have identical compositions, where various objects, fruits, and vegetables grouped together on a table, square here, make up the still-life. The collection of objects is arranged in a closed space with paneled walls. In both cases, Metzinger plays on the opposition between the still-life itself, with its curved lines and volumes, and the flat, rectilinear surfaces that surround it. No more fragmentation or complex construction, but rather a distinct desire to enhance contrast under the influence of Fernand Léger that has guided the hand of Jean Metzinger in this magnificent painting.
