L'ensemble se détache sur un fond marron très foncé. Dans la partie supérieure, une rature qui rend le mot «unum» illisible introduit une certaine violence à l'ensemble. Deux interprétations, l'une économique, l'autre politique, sont possibles: En effet ce tableau peut être lu comme une critique de la société de consommation capitalistique et individualiste. Le pouvoir du dollar roi reflète l'ambigüité de Basquiat face à l'argent, lui qui d'ancien homeless... graffeur habitué des rues de Manhattan... était devenu un artiste très courtisé. Cette oeuvre peut également se décrypter comme un pamphlet contre le racisme. En effet, Monticello en Virginie est le nom de la maison et du domaine de Thomas Jefferson, près de Charlottesville, dont l'architecture rappelle celle de l'hôtel de Salm en France (actuel Palais de la Légion d'Honneur) qu'il avait pu contempler lorsqu'il était ambassadeur en France de 1784 à 1789. Lui-même propriétaire d'esclaves, Monticello fut un bastion important de la traite des noirs. En amputant la mention latine «e pluribus unum», Basquiat met l'accent sur la pluralité de la société américaine et critique sa pseudo unité. Il exprime ainsi sa solidarité avec les minorités au sein de la société américaine encore marquée par le racisme. Cette oeuvre démontre par un dessin simple et des écritures sur fond noir, l'importance des symboles si chers à Jean-Michel Basquiat comme à tout artiste de l'art urbain. This large format oil painting represents the schematic drawing of the famous American 5 cents coin reproducing the house of Thomas Jefferson and the usual Latin mention e pluribus unum (diversity, unity refers to the union of America's states). All stands out against a black background. In the upper part, a scratch making unreadable the word unum introduces some violence. Two interpretations, one economic and the other political are possible. In fact, this painting can be interpreted as a criticism of capitalism and individualism modern society's consumption. The explosion of the king dollar reflects Basquiat's ambiguity towards money, having been previously homeless and graffiti artist accustomed to the streets... then becoming a very courted and respected artist. This work can also be decrypted as a pamphlet against racism. Indeed, Monticello, Virginia is the name of Thomas Jefferson's house and domain, near Charlottesville, of which architecture is similar to the Salm Hotel in France (today Palace of the Legion of Honour) he would have contemplated during his ambassador days in France from 1784 to 1789. Monticello was an important stronghold of the slave trade. By cutting the Latin mention e pluribus unum Basquiat emphasizes the plurality of American society and criticizes its pseudo unit. He expresses his solidarity with the minorities in American society still marked by racism. This work demonstrates by simple drawing and writings on black backgrounds, the importance of symbols that were dear to Jean-Michel Basquiat as to any street art artist.
