José Garzón Melgarejo (Colombia, 18th century) "Saint John of Nepomuk" Oil on copper. Signed. 82 x 47 cm. As a comparative reference, and even though it has a different subject matter, we can compare this painting with the Divine Shepherdess by Garzón Melgarejo, which can be found in the Colonial Museum of Bogota catalogued as number 16722. In that painting, as in this one, the face of the Virgin Mary is sweet and delicate with some characteristic features: the hands and fingers are long and fine, the lace edging on the garments, which in this case are, if possible, even more delicate and detailed. Saint John of Nepomuk, patron of the confessors. He was a Bohemian priest, vicar-general of Saint Giles Cathedral in Prague. He was martyred for defending the laws and autonomy of the church, being tortured and thrown into the river from Charles Bridge by King Wenceslaus IV. Behind the saint the symbol of the bridge appears and a small image of him falling from it, and in this case with his tongue in his hand, sign of his sacramental seal, “it is absolutely forbidden for a confessor to betray in any way a penitent”
