(mit irrtümlichen Maßangaben) Aachen 1985 (Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum), Ratingen 1986 (Stadtmuseum), Kreuz und Zeichen, Religiöse Grundlagen im Werk von Joseph Beuys, Ausst.Kat.Nr.19, S.68 mit Abb.81 (mit irrtümlichen Maßangaben) Rund zehn Jahre nach seiner Rückkehr aus Krieg, Verwundung und Gefangenschaft wird Joseph Beuys von der Gemeinde Büderich 1955 um eine Ideenskizze für ein Mahnmal zur Ehrung der Toten der beiden Weltkriege gebeten. 1957 erhält er den Ausführungsauftrag. Das Mahnmal in seiner endgültigen Form besteht zunächst aus einem Turm und einem zweiflügeligen Tor mit schweren Eisenbeschlägen. Im Inneren des Turms befindet sich das „Auferstehungssymbol“, welches an einer „Stabkette“ hängt, die mit dem Auferstehungssymbol eine zwingende Einheit bildet. Neun flache, schmiedeeiserne Stabelemente sind auf ungewöhnlich freie, aber auch feste Art mittels starker Nägel zusammengefügt. Das vorliegende Werk „Kettenglied“ ist ein konzeptioneller Teil des Büdericher Ehrenmals. Es greift das tragende Element des Gesamtwerks heraus und verdeutlicht, wie wichtig Joseph Beuys die Absage an Konstruktionen herkömmlicher Ketten war und wie sehr ihm an der Entwicklung einer besonderen Lösung lag, um der Bedeutung der Arbeit im Detail und im Ganzen gerecht zu werden. Es ist anzunehmen, dass Joseph Beuys die Stabkette ebenso wie die Eisenbeschläge der Türflügel und die Brustplatte des Auferstehungssymbols in der Schmiede seines Cousins in Spellen angefertigt hat, wo die vorliegende Arbeit als Einzelstück entsteht. In 1957 he received the contract to complete the work. In its final form, the memorial consists of a tower and double doors with heavy ironwork. On the inside of the tower is a 'Resurrection Symbol' which hangs on a bar chain, forming a compelling unity with the resurrection symbol. Nine flat, wrought-iron rod elements are combined in an unusually free, but also fixed manner, by means of strong nails. The present work 'Kettenglied' is a conceptual part of the Büderich Memorial. It singles out the main element of the overall work and illustrates how important the rejection of conventional chain constructions was to Joseph Beuys, and how much he was interested in developing a particular solution to justify the importance of the work in detail and as a whole. It can be assumed that Joseph Beuys made the bar chain as well as the iron fittings of the double doors and the breastplate of the resurrection symbol in his cousin's forge in Spellen. The present work is therefore a unique piece. According to the Aachen catalogue from 1995, the present work was forged by Joseph Beuys himself.
