Gouache on silk, mounted on cardboard, signed with a stamp lower right Fils du dernier roi du Tonkin, Le Pho rentre à l’Ecole des Beaux-arts d’Hanoï en 1925 et fait donc partie de la première promotion, inaugurant ainsi une rencontre importante entre le monde occidental et extrême-oriental. En 1931, il participe à l’Exposition coloniale qui se tient à Paris et passe les deux années suivantes à voyager en Belgique, au Pays-Bas, en Italie avant de retourner enseigner en Indochine. En 1937, il revient à Paris et s’y installe. Notre tableau est fidèle au style de l’artiste poétique et délicat. Nous retrouvons aussi son goût de la ligne et des couleurs en aplat dégageant une émouvante sérénité. The son of the last king of Tonkin, Le Pho joined the Fine Arts School in Hanoi in 1925 when he became a student of the first class of the newly formed Ecole des Beaux-Arts d’Indochine fine art school, thereby participating in an important encounter between the West and Far East. In 1931, he participated in the Paris Colonial Exhibition and spent the next two years traveling through Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy before returning to Indochina to teach. In 1937, he returned to Paris to settle there. This painting is a moving rendition of the artist’s delicate, poetic style. One can also here appreciate his appreciation of lines and areas of solid color in a painting that movingly expresses calm tranquility. Provenance Collection privée
