Provenienz Privatsammlung, Berlin Bereits ab 1935 beginnt Lucio Fontana, sich mit dem Material Ton auseinanderzusetzen und erste Erfahrungen in Keramikwerkstätten zu sammeln. Die spezifischen Eigenschaften des Tons - weich und leicht formbar - ermöglichen es ihm, Ideen zu erproben und zu experimentieren. So kommt es auch, dass die ersten Schnitte (Tagli) in keramischen Arbeiten entstehen, bevor der Künstler sie auf seine Gemälde überträgt. Allein die Weiterentwicklung der Idee (concetto) steht im Mittelpunkt von Fontanas Schaffen. Gattungen oder Techniken spielen dabei nur eine sekundäre Rolle. „Fontana zielt auf den Kosmos, die Wissenschaft, die Idee und nicht darauf, der Malerei eine neue Richtung zu geben oder das Kunstwerk auf der Rangliste der künstlerischen Medien ein Treppchen nach oben zu schieben. Die vorliegende Arbeit aus dem Jahr 1957 veranschaulicht eindrücklich Lucio Fontanas konzeptuelle Vorgehensweise: Wie bei seinen Gemälden ist das Material mit Löchern und Schnitten versehen, um die gewohnte Zweidimensionalität zu überwinden. Aus dem flachen Fond entsteht eine Skulptur, die den Raum erweitert und ihrer eigentlichen Funktion enthoben ist. Fontana trägt mit seiner Interpretation zur Neubewertung der Gattung Keramik bei und wird so zum Vorbild nachfolgender Künstlerkollegen wie Norbert Prangenberg, Thomas Schütte oder Rosemarie Trockel. The specific characteristics of clay, soft and easily maleable, allow him to test ideas and to experiment. Consequently, the first cuts (Tagli) in ceramic works develop before the artist transfers them to his painting. The progression of the idea (concetto) in itself is in the focus of Fontana's creative work. Genres and techniques merely play a secondary role. The present work from 1957 clearly illustrates Lucio Fontana's conceptual approach: as is the case in his paintings, the material is furnished with perforations and cuts in order to break up the habitual two-dimensionality. A sculpture emerges from the flat background, expanding the surrounding space and relinquishing its original function. With his interpretation Fontana contributes to the reappraisal of the ceramic genre and thus becomes a role model for successive artist colleagues such as Norbert Prangenberg, Thomas Schütte, or Rosemarie Trockel.
