Mahakala Panjara. Bronze, mit silbereingelegten Augen. Tibet. 15./16. Jh. Der zwergenhafte Zeltbeschützer gur gönpo steht auf der Leiche eines Feindes, ein Kultmesser und eine blutgefüllte Schädelschale in den Händen und einen Klangstab aus Sandelholz in den Armbeugen haltend, gekleidet in einen Tigerfellschurz und geschmückt mit den dharmapala-Juwelen. Der einfache Lotosthron verschlossen, Bodenplatte mit einem Doppel-vajra in Gravur versehen. Diese Form des Mahakala wird besonders in der Shakya-Schule verehrt. Das für ihn typische Attribut, der Klangstab in seinen Armbeugen, der mit einem anderen Holzstab angeschlagen wird, dient dazu, die Mönche zusammen zu rufen. Darstellungen des Panjara-Mahakala sind häufig in Malereien und in Steinarbeiten abgebildet, in Bronze ist die Darstellung allerdings selten. H 20,7 cm Provenienz Privatsammlung, Norddeutschland, erworben 1971 in Neu-Delhi A Tibetan silver-inlaid bronze figure of Mahakala Panjara. 15th/16th century The lord of the pavilion tramples on a human figure prostrate on a single lotus base, holding a kartrika, a kapala and a wooden gong (gandi), wearing a tiger skin dhoti, adorned with necklaces, a snake and a garland of severed heads. The face with silver-inlayed eyes surmounted by a jewelled tiara. Base sealed, base plate incised with a double-vajra. Mahakala Panjara represents an important tutelary deity of the Shakya order, this form of Mahakala seems to have connection with the myth wherein Mahakala promised Shakyamuni Buddha himself that he would always protect the monastic community. His key attribute, the wooden gong (gandi) laid across his arms, is used to summon the monks to assemblies. Mahakala Panjara most often depicted in painting and stone sculpture, images of this wrathful deity in bronze are rare.
