Sebastiano Mainardi wurde 1466 in San Gimignano geboren und schloss sich dort um 1475 der Werkstatt von Domenico Ghirlandaio an, als der berühmte Künstler gerade in der Santa Fina Kapelle der dortigen Collegiata den Freskenzyklus mit Episoden aus dem Leben der Heiligen anfertigte. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt verband Mainardi sich fast untrennbar mit der Werkstatt von Ghirlandaio und arbeitete an allen wichtigen Aufträgen mit, wie jener im Chor der Tornabuoni-Kapelle von Santa Maria Novella in Florenz und in der Hauptkapelle des Doms von Pisa. Gegen Ende der 1480er Jahre entstanden die ersten autonomen Werke des Künstlers, die oft auf Kartons des Meisters entstanden, wie z.B. die Mariä Himmelfahrt in der Baroncelli-Kapelle in Santa Croce in Florenz. Domenico Ghirlandaio starb 1494, und Mainardi blieb noch einige Jahre in seiner Werkstatt, die von seinen Brüdern Benedetto und David weitergeführt wurde. Zur Jahrhundertwende kehrte er zur Arbeit nach San Gimignano zurück. Er starb an der Pest in Florenz in der zweiten Septemberhälfte 1513. Aus der späten Schaffensphase des Künstlers ist eine Reihe von Gemälden - alle im Rundformat - mit der Darstellung der Anbetung des Kindes bekannt, die eine sehr ähnliche Komposition besitzen. Das vorliegende Gemälde ist eng mit mindestens zwei Tondi in Privatbesitz verwandt, die leichte Variationen in der Zusammensetzung aufweisen. Das eine zeigt eine Stadt mit einer monumentalen Skyline im Hintergrund, während der Stall, in der Esel und Ochse ruhen, eine Fassade mit Säulen und Gebälk beinhaltet; das andere zeigt eine zu unserem Werk ähnlichere Komposition mit Ausnahme der Vegetation hinter der Heiligen Familie. Eine solche Produktion, die sich auf einen begrenzten Zeitraum konzentriert, lässt sich vielleicht durch das Vorhandensein eines Kartons erklären, der in diesem Fall vielleicht auch von Domenico Ghirlandaio entworfen wurde. Die Verwendung einiger Elemente aus den Werken des Meisters, insbesondere aus dem Altarbild mit der Anbetung der Hirten in der Sassetti-Kapelle in der Basilika Santa Trinita in Florenz, könnte als Beweis für diese Abhängigkeit angesehen werden. Sebastiano Mainardi was born in 1466 in San Gimignano where around 1475 he joined the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio, just as the famous artist was working in the Santa Fina Chapel, the local collegiata, on the production of a fresco cycle with episodes from the lives of saints. From this point onward Mainardi formed an almost inseparable connection with the workshop of Ghirlandaio and worked on all important commissions, such as the one in the chancel of the Tornabuoni-Chapel of Santa Maria Novella in Florence and another one in the main chapel of the Cathedral of Pisa. Towards the end of the 1480s the first autonomous works by the artist were created, often originating from the master's cartoons, such as the Assumption of Mary in the Baroncelli-Chapel in Santa Croce in Florence. Domenico Ghirlandaio died in 1494, and for several years Mainardi remained in the workshop, which was continued on by his brothers Benedetto and David. Towards the turn of the century he returned to work in San Gimignano. He died of the plague in Florence in the second half of September 1513. From the artist's late work a series of paintings - all in round format - with a depiction of the Adoration of the Christ Child is known, which all have a similar composition. The painting on offer is closely related to at least two Tondi in private ownership, that present slight variations in their structure. One depicts a city with a monumental skyline in the background, whereas the stable, in which a donkey and an ox rest, has a facade with pillars and entablature; the other shows a composition more similar to our work with the exception of the vegetation behind the Holy Family. Such a production, concentrated as it is in a limited frame of time, can perhaps be explained by the presence of a cartoon, which in this case may have been designed by Domenico Ghirlandaio. The use of some elements from works of the master, especially from the altarpiece with the Adoration of the Shepherds in the Sassetti-Chapel in the Basilica Santa Trinita in Florence, can be seen as evidence of this dependency.
