Au cours du XIX? siècle, les autorités coloniales interdirent les pratiques judiciaires associées à la société du Ngil, dont les masques se distinguaient par la sobriété et la pureté de leurs formes. Une nouvelle tradition de masques se développa alors sous le nom d’Ekekek. Les œuvres de cette période se caractérisent par des traits plus affirmés et des volumes plus expressifs, notamment des arcades sourcilières proéminentes parfois interprétées comme l’écho des modes européennes contemporaines. Par son style, ce masque se situe à la croisée de ces deux traditions. Il conserve l’élégance dépouillée propre aux masques du Ngil tout en annonçant les formes plus puissantes associées à l’Ekekek. Son enduit de kaolin blanc, couleur étroitement liée au monde des ancêtres et aux notions de justice, renforce encore cette filiation. During the nineteenth century, colonial authorities prohibited the judicial practices associated with the Ngil society, whose masks were characterized by their austere and refined forms. In response, a new masking tradition emerged, known as Ekekek. These later masks adopted more pronounced and expressive features, including prominent eyebrows that have occasionally been interpreted as reflecting contemporary European fashions. Positioned stylistically between these two traditions, the present mask combines the restrained elegance of Ngil sculpture with the more robust and expressive forms associated with the Ekekek period. Coated with white kaolin, a material closely associated with ancestral spirits and notions of justice, it stands as a compelling testament to the adaptability and continuity of Fang artistic traditions.
