II., 5 Continents, 2021, p. 296, fig. 368   Cette sculpture représente une puissante figure féminine coiffée d’une haute et ample coiffure appelée mphemba, allaitant deux enfants. Dans la société matrilinéaire Yombe, cette coiffure distinctive l’identifie comme une ancêtre fondatrice ou la mère d’un lignage. Les deux enfants qu’elle allaite renforcent son association à la fécondité et à la continuité du lignage. Cette œuvre occupe une place singulière au sein de la statuaire Kongo par sa représentation inhabituelle de la maternité. Deux enfants, plutôt qu’un seul comme c’est généralement le cas, s’agrippent avidement à leur mère. Associés à la posture peu commune de cette dernière, ils composent un ensemble harmonieux et puissant, animé d’une remarquable énergie. Les sculptures de ce type sont généralement rattachées à des cultes féminins liés à la fécondité, particulièrement actifs entre la fin du XVIII? siècle et le milieu du XIX? siècle. Cette période fut marquée par d’importants bouleversements sociaux et démographiques. Dans ce contexte, les femmes Yombe furent amenées à assumer des responsabilités accrues, conciliant leurs fonctions traditionnelles de mères et de gardiennes du foyer avec des tâches agricoles et économiques souvent dévolues aux hommes. Notre sculpture incarne ainsi non seulement la fécondité, mais aussi la continuité du lignage, la stabilité de la communauté et sa prospérité. In Yombe matrilineal society, this distinctive hairstyle identifies her as a founding ancestress or the mother of a lineage. The two children she nurses further emphasize her association with fertility and the continuity of the lineage. This work occupies a singular place within Kongo sculpture through its unusual representation of motherhood. Two children, rather than the single child more commonly depicted, cling eagerly to their mother. Combined with her uncommon posture, they create a harmonious and powerful composition animated by remarkable vitality. Sculptures of this type are generally associated with female cults linked to fertility, which were particularly active between the late eighteenth and the mid-nineteenth century. This period was marked by significant social and demographic upheavals. In this context, Yombe women assumed increasing responsibilities, combining their traditional roles as mothers and guardians of the household with agricultural and economic tasks often entrusted to men. The image of this nurturing ancestress thus embodies not only fertility, but also the continuity of the lineage, the stability of the community, and its prosperity.
