Conrad Adenauer, President Theodor Heuss, Ludwig Erhard and Kurt Schumacher were among the most illustrious customers of the Mercedes 300. This type was soon knicknamed "Adenauer" because the German Chancellor wanted to be driven only in this car even when he travelled abroad. He had six 300s in turn, the first (a 1951 model) being now exhibited in the "Haus des Geschichte" (the House of History) in Bonn, the last, in the Stuttgart Museum. As the 170 S, the 300 was not an absolutely new design. It was related to the 1940 type 260 which never reached the production stage. The first 300 engine delivered 115 bhp. The separate frame was similar to the 170 S and 220 ones. This car boasted a novelty: an electrically actuated rear torsion bar which automatically adjusted the height of the chassis according to the weight. The gearbox could be manual or automatic (Borg Warner). The 300 production started in November 1951. A new version named 300c appeared in May 1955 with a larger rear window. Like the previous 300 and 300b, the 300c could be fitted with a separation and a sliding roof. An open version was offered in the Cabriolet D form until June1956. From this date a special lengthened type was available. In August 1957 a redesigned 300 range was introduced using the longest wheelbase and a Bosch injection system giving 160 bhp. The cabriolet D style was reintroduced in December 1958. The car offered here is a rare 4-door 4/5-seat cabriolet on a 1956 300 Dc chassis. It had been restored from the bare chassis. It is finished in blue. The leatherwork is parchment white, the hood, the carpets and the hood-cover are beige. The dashboard and the door-top strips are made of elm-wood veneer. The Becker Mexico radio-receiver is original. The wheels are steel discs finished in the body color with chrome-plated and painted embellishers.
