Miguel Cabrera (Antequera de Oaxaca, Mexico, 1715 / 1720 - Mexico, 1768) "John of God" Oil on copper. Signed, dated in 1749 and situated in Mexico. Wooden frame with embossed and chased silver applications. Cabrera was one of the most renowned painters in the world of Novo-Hispanic painting. Little is known of his youth. The first news of him comes in 1739, the year of his marriage to Ana María Solano. We also know of his move to Juan Correa’s workshop in the capital of the Viceroyalty. The Archbishop Rubio Salinas was the protector of Cabrera, who named him his chamber painter. He was also painter to the Jesuit order and did a great deal of painting for their churches. In 1753 he was named life-long president of the Academy of San Carlos. His work can be found in many churches and convents in Mexico. Two of his images of the Virgin of Guadalupe are kept in the Vatican Museum. Another, painted in 1756, for the temple of San Francisco Javier, is kept in the Museo Nacional del Virreinato in Mexico.
