Numéro historique dans lequel John Difool et Deepo, sa mouette à béton, font leur entrée avec le premier chapitre de cet « Incal Noir » : les nuits de l’anneau rouge ! Ce nouvel héros à la longue chevelure rousse sorti tout droit de l’imaginaire de Jodorowsky et Moebius animera les dix premiers numéros de l’année suivante. Onze chapitres se succèderont ainsi variant entre six et onze pages selon les mois. Et pour la mise en couleur, le travail d’orfèvre sera assuré par un jeune dessinateur qui commence à faire parler de lui dans le journal : Yves Chaland… John Difool rejoignait ainsi pour l’éternité Arzach et le Major Fatal dans le Panthéon de Moebius. Le premier volet de cette saga était né, englobant d’une traite ce qui sortira en librairie en deux tomes dès 1981 et 1982. À partir de 2011, Les Humanoïdes Associés recyclaient un gros plan de cette illustration pour le quatrième plat de couverture de ses rééditions de « L’Incal Noir » et « L’Incal Lumière » ! Original cover of Métal Hurlant no 58, published in December 1980 – an historic issue in which John Difool and Deepo, his concrete seagull, make their first appearance in “Night at the Red Ring”, the first chapter of L’Incal Noir (The Black Incal). This new hero with his long red hair, whom Jodorowsky and Moebius had plucked straight from their imagination, was to grace the pages of the magazine for the first ten issues of the following year. There were eleven chapters in all, with between six and eleven pages each depending on the month, the colouring for which was entrusted to a young illustrator who was just starting to make a name for himself in the magazine: Yves Chaland. John Difool was thus to join the eternal ranks of the Moebius pantheon, along with the likes of Arzach and Major Fatal, and the first volume in the saga saw the light of day, encompassing in one fell swoop all the material that would go to make up the two albums issued in 1981 and 1982. In 2011, Les Humanoïdes associés re-used a close-up of this cover for the back cover of Moebius’s re-editions L’Incal Noir and L’Incal Lumière (Luminous Incal).
