In dichtem, umlaufenden Relief Krieger in antikisierenden Rüstungen auf ihren Pferden in wildem Schlachtengetümmel. Manche Partien nahezu vollrund ausgearbeitet. Den oberen Abschluss bildet ein in Silber gearbeitetes Lorbeerband. Der Scharnierdeckel mit auskragendem, leicht gewelltem Rand, Blumen- und Früchterelief sowie Kugelknauf. Oval, domed base with punched flowers in relief. Above it the exceptional ivory cover with skilfully carved battle scene. In dense relief warriors on horseback in antique-like armour engaged in heated battle all round. Some parts are almost sculpted in the round. The upper edge is a silver-work laurel band. The hinged lid with protruding, slightly wavy rim, flowers and fruits in relief, and a spherical knob. The large serpentine handle decorated with acanthus and a frieze of pearls. Ca. 3060 (incl. ivory)g. Height 31.5cm. Marked twice: assayer's mark Augsburg 1626-1630 (Seling no.360), maker's mark Matthäus Pregel (active 1609-1635, ibid. no.1229). Condition B. The elephant tusk used here must be considered exceptionally valuable given its sheer size and the time spent making the tankard. Owing to the remarkably skilful treatment of the ivory, with a great effect of depth and perspective in the representation of the warriors and horses, this tankard must be conidered a Gesamtkunstwerk of extraordinary quality.
