Das Gemälde zeigt vor einem nächtlich dunklen Grund ein vergoldetes Gefäß auf einer Marmorplatte, das gefüllt ist mit farbenprächtigen Blüten und Blättern: eine blaue Iris in der Mitte, daneben Mohnknospe und -blüte, eine rotweiß gesprenkelte Tulpe, Schneeball und Rosen sowie eine einzelne, dunkelgelbe Tagetes. Auch eine weiße Schnecke haftet auf einem Rosenblatt und ein kleiner schwarzer Käfer saugt an einer Nelkenblüte, während von links eine Libelle das bunte Gesteck ansteuert. Die Gemälde des holländischen Stilllebenmalers Nicolaes Lachtropius tauchen nicht häufig auf dem Kunstmarkt auf. Meistens handelt es sich um sogenannte Unterholzbilder mit Waldboden in der Art von Marseus van Schriek. Unser prachtvolles Blumenstück dagegen gehört zu seinen eher seltenen klassischen Blumenstücken in der Art des Willem van Aelst. Wie bei diesem Delfter Maler zeichnen sich auch Lachtropius Bilder durch die naturgetreue Wiedergabe der Blüten und die kontrastreichen Farben aus. Ein sehr ähnliches Gemälde von Lachtropius befindet sich im Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Nicolaes Lachtropius Still Life with a Vase of Flowers and Insects Oil on canvas (relined). 66.5 x 53.5 cm. This work depicts a golden vessel on a marble slab before a midnight black ground that perfectly sets off the brightness of the flowers: A blue iris in the centre beside a poppy flower and bud, a red and white spotted tulip, snowballs, roses, and a single deep yellow marigold. A white snail crawls along a rose leaf, a small black beetle feeds on a carnation flower, whilst a dragonfly approaches the colourful arrangement from the left. Works by the Dutch still life painter Nicolaes Lachtropius do not crop up often on the art market, and those that do are mainly forest floor depictions in the manner of Marseus van Schriek. The present work is one of his rarer classical floral still lifes in the manner of Willem van Aelst. Like those of this Delft master, Lachtropius' works are also characterised by their naturalistic style and use of contrasting colours. A similar work by this artist is kept in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
