Good condition
One of Dufy's popular horse race paintings that boasts the artist’s typically bright color scheme; the auction record for a painting by Dufy is currently set at around €480,000
This painting is a work featuring the typical cheerful bright colors, which characterize the oeuvre of French painter Jean Dufy. In the 1920s the latter gained recognition as a talented colorist in Paris. Dufy was able to develop his own visual language, which continued to be determined by color. The present composition is one of a series of works on the subject of horse racing, which Dufy created since his early creative phase. As always, the color harmony is paramount. On a bright green background the horses, jockeys and spectators are rendered as colorful silhouettes with swift, strategically placed brushstrokes. Above extends a lively, bright blue sky. The dynamic brushwork allows Dufy to capture the animated atmosphere of the racecourse – a frenzied feeling that not even the viewer can escape. He, too, suddenly feels like cheering and rooting for the yellow horse.
A photo certificate from Jacques Bailly, Paris, dated 11/9/2006, confirming the authenticity of this work, is enclosed.
The painting is signed lower left ‘Jean Dufy’. It is in good condition. The edges are minimally rubbed due to framing, with a few retouchings. The frame shows slight signs of wear. The framed work measures 67x 76 cm, the stretcher frame measures 46 x 55 cm.
Jean Dufy (1888-1964)
Jean Dufy was born into a family of artists and was the brother of the famous painter Raoul Dufy. He only gradually discovered his passion for painting, whilst attending exhibitions of works by the French avant-garde artists in his hometown of Le Havre. After his military service, he moved to Paris in 1912, where he met Derain, Braque, Picasso and Apollinaire. Two years later his first watercolors were exhibited, with which Dufy enjoyed great success. Numerous exhibitions, e.g. at the Salon d'Automne and even in New York, followed. His preferred subject matter included flowers, animals and circus scenes in compositions featuring an incredible array of colors. In addition, Dufy worked as a porcelain painter in the workshops of Théodore Haviland in Limoges for over 30 years. In 1925 he was awarded a gold medal for a service at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs. On the occasion of the Exposition Internationale in 1937, he collaborated with his brother Raoul on a fresco for the Pavillon de l'Electricité. In the 1950s and 60s Dufy traveled extensively through Europe and North Africa, where he found new motifs for his works. Again and again, he also portrayed the city of Paris, its city gates, streets, squares, coaches as well as the Eiffel Tower and the Seine. Often he was inspired by music and theater. Dufy’s works are held in numerous museums worldwide, including the Musée National d'Art Moderne and Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Albertina in Vienna, the Art Institute of Chicago and the MoMA in New York.
