His special affection for the Impressionists is especially traceable in his landscape compositions, where his focus on plants and flowers adds a strong decorative element. Many paintings were inspired by the artist’s trips to Kachanovka, the Tarnovksy family estate in the Ukraine, where Makovsky and his family were frequent summer visitors during the 1880s. His son, Sergei Makovsky, remembered that his father had set out into the garden every morning and painted some part of it in oil or watercolor. Later, the artist used these landscapes as preparatory material for several of his monumental canvasses, including his ‘Bacchanalia’, which he painted in 1891 in Paris. Condition: The painting is in very good condition, consistent with age. There are a number of overpaintings to the lower part of the depiction. The frame shows a number of material losses, but is in good general condition. The stretcher measures 65 x 93 cm and the frame 89 x 116 cm. Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky (1839-1915) Konstantin Makovsky grew up in an artistically talented family. His two brothers Vladimir and Nikolay were also trained as painters. From 1851 to 1857 he was educated at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He then continued his studies at the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg. In 1867 Makovsky received an academic degree and was eventually appointed professor in 1869. He is also well-known as a co-founder of the artists’ association ‘Peredvizhniki’ (The Wanderers) who followed the tradition of Realism and organized a number of group exhibitions. Today, examples of his works can be found, for instance, at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Russian Museum in St Petersburg and the Art Institute of Chicago.
