Cette œuvre annoncerait à juste titre l'avènement du mouvement cubiste et se démarquerait par ailleurs des travaux de Georges Braque par sa nouvelle approche de la représentation picturale de l'espace et de sa perception. Le terme “Cubisme” fut adopté pour la première fois au cours du Salon des Indépendants en 1909, à l'occasion duquel Braque exposait son tableau Le Port, œuvre faisant apparaître un décalage entre la division de l'espace et les rythmes de la composition. C'est alors que le critique d'art Charles Morice fit cette remarque : “Je pense que Braque est en somme victime, hors toute considération cubiste, d'une admiration hâtive ou trop exclusive pour Cézanne”.5 C'est à cette période que Picasso eut une révélation. Comme il l'explique avec ses propres termes : “C'est à cet instant précis que tout commença, que je découvris quelle direction prendre … alors que nous développions le Cubisme, ni Braque ni moi-même n'avions l'intention de créer ce mouvement, nous ne souhaitions qu'exprimer ce que nous ressentions au plus profond de nous-mêmes” 6 . A partir de 1917, Picasso travailla simultanément selon les styles cubiste, naturaliste et synthétique, traitant fréquemment un même sujet selon différentes manières. Les œuvres ci-dessus appartiennent à une série de pièces exécutées avant 1920 qui représentent la guitare comme un motif pictural. Commentant l'œuvre de Picasso de cette période, John Richardson suggère : “Picasso ne se sentait plus contraint d'explorer la complexité des formes et de l'espace qui l'avait préoccupé dix années auparavant. A présent, il se sentait libre d'exploiter ses découvertes cubistes d'une manière décorative et visuellement agréable… Dès lors, le style de Picasso ne serait plus empreint de cette atmosphère de sérénité magistrale qui caractérisa indéniablement cette dernière grande période du mouvement cubiste” 7 . Par comparaison au tableau présenté précédemment, cette œuvre représente la genèse d'un tout nouveau Picasso. Elle fut créée en 1920, plusieurs années après que l'artiste ait atteint un haut niveau de notoriété et de confort matériel. Picasso ne nous délivre plus de message politique, ni de tourments personnels : ce tableau témoigne d'une approche joyeuse de la vie. Entre temps, Picasso était devenu un peintre connu de tous, riche d'expériences tant en termes de sujets que de styles. Cette œuvre se distingue par sa sobriété à travers la juxtaposition d'aplats de couleurs brune, ocre, et blanc ivoire. As art critic Felix Fénéon justly observed upon viewing the artist's Desmoiselles d'Avignon, “This is a painting in complete rupture avec the past that could well open the way to a completely new approach to art of this century”. This work would rightly serve as the precursor to cubism, a new pictorial convention invented beside Georges Braque to represent space and perception. The term “cubism” was first coined during the Salon des Indépendants in 1909, where Braque exposed his work Le Port, where the fragmentation of surfaces did not correspond with the rhythms of the composition and when art critic Charles Morice remarked, “I think that M. Braque is victim, in sum, cubism aside, to an admiration too exclusive or poorly thought out of Cezanne.” 5 It was during this time that Picasso felt a calling. As he explained in his own words, “It was right then and there that everything took off, that I understood where I could go…When we created cubism, [Braque and I] we had no intention to create cubism, but to express what was within us”.6 From 1917 onwards, Picasso worked in both naturalistic and Synthetic Cubist styles, frequently treating the same subject in different manners. The present work belongs to a series executed befor 1920 that incorporates the guitar as a pictorial motif. Discussing Picasso's work from this period, John Richardson suggests that ‘No longer did Picasso feel obligated to investigate the intricate formal and spatial problems that preoccupied him ten years before. Instead he felt free to relax and exploit his cubist discoveries in a decorative manner that delights the eye…Never again did the artist's style recapture the air of magisterial calm that is such a feature of this last great phase of Cubism”.7 In comparison to the former work presented, this present work is the offspring of a completely different Picasso; it was created in 1920, years after the artist had attained great wealth and renown. Instead of delivering a political message or recounting his emotional malheur, this work attests a more light-hearted approach. By this time in his career, Picasso had become an artist for everyone, having experimented with dozens of themes and styles.
