Paire de défenses de mammouth laineux Pair of Woolly Mammoth Tusks Mammuthus primigenius Pleistocene Northern Yakutia, Russia Approximately the size of an Asian elephant, the woolly mammoth was equipped with two distinctive long tusks. The tusks often exhibited a double curve such as the present example, and were used to dig the snow away while feeding. The males may have also used their tusks in combat, perhaps in competition for female mammoths. Mammoths also had thick hair and fat storage to provide warmth in the harsh conditions. The present very large specimens originate from an adult and have an inward double curvature. They are exemplary for their rich brown coloration in comparison to other specimens and are further distinguished by a rich blue-green patina from mineralization.
