August 1972. Warhol hatte sich gemeinsam mit Paul Morrissey, seinem Filmemacher und engsten Mitarbeiter aus der „Factory“, dort kurz zuvor das weitläufige Anwesen „Eothen“ gekauft, in dem sie in den folgenden Jahren bis zu Warhols Tod 1987 zahlreiche enge Freunde und Gäste empfingen. Unter diesen waren namhafte Künstler und „celebrities“, in deren Kreisen auch Peter Beard verkehrte, der als direkter Nachbar und befreundeter Künstler ebenfalls ein gern gesehener Gast bei Warhol und Morrissey war. Andy Warhol bezeichnete Beard einmal als „one of the most fascinating men in the world“. Im Sommer 1972 verkehrten in Eothen neben Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis und ihrer Schwester Lee Radziwill u.a. Mick und Bianca Jagger und die Rolling Stones, die das Anwesen von Jaggers engem Freund Warhol erstmalig 1972 besuchten und es u.a. später für die Proben zu ihren Alben nutzten. Es ist anzunehmen, dass das vorliegende Portrait Warhols in den Monaten der legendären „Exile on Main Street“ Tournee der Rolling Stones entstanden ist, die Peter Beard gemeinsam mit Lee Radziwill und dem Autor Truman Capote als Photograph begleitet hatte. So trägt ein weiteres Unikat, welches in der genannten Literatur publiziert und im Motiv identisch ist, jedoch von Beard mit einem Heinz-Ketchup Reklameausschnitt bearbeitet wurde, die zusätzliche Bezeichnung: „Andy Warhol at home in Montauk (Church Estate) during the Rolling Stones tour 1972 / Peter Beard“. In dem hier vorliegenden Unikat hat Peter Beard eine Zigarettenschachtel der britischen Marke „Death Cigarettes“ in die Aufnahme collagiert, welche ein Totenkopfsymbol schmückt. Er nimmt damit den in der Aufnahme auf den Knien der Pop-Art Legende ruhenden Totenschädel auf, ein beliebtes Objekt Warhols, das wenig später in seinen „Skull-Paintings“ (1976) und in verschiedenen „Self-Portraits with Skull“ (1978) als wiederkehrendes Motiv Verwendung findet. Der in dem Werk doppelt vorhandene Totenschädel als Symbol der Vanitas kann als ein direkter Verweis Peter Beards auf den beiden Künstlern gemeinsamen „Memento Mori“ Gedanken verstanden werden, der sich sowohl durch das künstlerische Schaffen Andy Warhols als auch durch das Werk Peter Beards zieht. Warhol had recently bought the sizeable „Eothen“ compound together with his close collaborator, the filmmaker Paul Morrissey. Over the following years, until Warhol’s death in 1987, he and Morrissey entertained numerous friends and celebrity guests at the estate. These included well-known artists, among them Peter Beard, who was also a neighbour. Andy Warhol once referred to Beard as “one of the most fascinating men in the world”. During the summer of 1972 the guests at Eothen included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and her sister Lee Radziwill, Mick and Bianca Jagger and the Rolling Stones. Jagger was a close friend of Warhol; the band visited the estate for the first time in 1972, later returning on a number of occasions to rehearse albums or work on their music. It seems this portrait of Warhol was made during the time of the Stones’ legendary “Exile on Main Street“ tour: together with Lee Radziwill and the author Truman Capote, Beard accompanied the band as photographer on this tour. There exists another unique photograph with this same motif - albeit reworked by Beard with extracts of a Heinz Ketchup advertisement - which bears the inscription: “Andy Warhol at home in Montauk (Church Estate) during the Rolling Stones tour 1972 / Peter Beard”. This second photograph has been published in the above-named literature. In the present work, Peter Beard has collaged a cigarette packet from the British firm “Death Cigarettes” to his photograph. This packaging is adorned with a skull and crossbones, echoing the skull which rests on Warhol’s knee. The skull was a favourite motif of Warhol’s, reappearing a short time later in his “Skull paintings” (1976) and in various “Self Portraits with Skull” (1978). Here it can clearly be interpreted as invoking the “memento mori”, an idea which runs through the oeuvres of both Beard and Warhol alike.
