I love Delacroix painting, but unfortunately, like a lot of old masters, time has given it a patina of quiet and dignity that has to be torn away so we can get back to the nastiness of the original scene. The art appreciation of generations is great in some ways - the picture gradually gets reproduced in the best art books - but at the same time the excitement level sinks to zero. So, even though you may prefer the stately calm of 1820, I think I'm doing Delacroix a big favor here not making fun of him, in bringing the “terror and romance” level up to where it should be in 1991.
