A major large-scale portrait of the artist’s brother, the historian Dmitri Petrovich Konchalovsky, paintings from Konchalovsky’s mature creative period fetch up to 1.2 million euros at international auctions
This large-scale portrait of the historian Dmitri Petrovich Konchalovsky dates to the mature creative period of the major Russian realist Petr Konchalovsky.
The painting was created in 1934, while the artist was living at his dacha in Bugry and intensively devoted himself to portraiture. During this time he created numerous portraits of family members as well as prominent cultural figures.
In his portraits Petr Konchalovsky centered on the psychological expression and less on the material or manner of painting. His focus primarily lay with capturing the internal state of the sitter and his character.
The viewer recognizes this profound interest in the present portrait of Konchalovsky’s younger brother Dmitri, who worked as a historian, philologist and professor of history and law of ancient Rome. As the central figure Konchalovsky placed him on a throne like a cardinal.
The presentation focuses on the face, on its profound and thoughtful expression, which is enhanced by the monumental size of the image.
The use of intense purple, complemented by a deep black and a balanced red-brown color scheme endows the portrait with dignity and severity.
In his diaries, the artist mentions his desire to achieve ‘a simplified synthesis of color’, which lead him to a new subtlety in his color composition.
The above mentioned aspects make the ‘Portrait of the brother’ one of the most important works of this genre within Konchalovsky’s oeuvre.
The painting is in overall very good condition. In the lower right area of the painting there are a few small retouched spots It is signed in Cyrillic and dated upper right ‘P. Konchalovsky / 1934’, further signed ‘P. Konchalovsky’, dated ‘1934’ and numbered ‘1121’ on the verso.
The frame shows some wear.
The framed measures work measures 175 x 144 cm, the stretcher frame measures 163 x 133 cm.
