Pietro Dandini, Allegory of a Volcano
Pietro Dandini came from a prominent family of painters in Florence. After initially studying with his uncle Vincenzo Dandini, he later travelled to Venice, Lombardy, Emilia, and Rome to complete his training. Already described by his contemporaries as incomparably vital, Pier Dandini can be counted among the most remarkable artists in late 17th-century Florence, primarily due to his absorption of various Baroque innovations, especially those of Giordano, into the Florentine tradition. As Prof. Bellesi notes, the present allegory is a striking testimony to the artist's interest in "anatomical studies," a practice which was also highly valued in Vincenzo Dandini's workshop.
