Kjærholm graduated from the School of Arts and Crafts in 1952 and was hired by Fritz Hansen to work in the factory experimenting with materials. Kjærholm experimented with steam bent wood, and the "bowstring" chairs from this period were designed with a minimum number of parts, which eliminated the traditional distinction between the legs and the seat frame.
