Verso: Denoted on the canvas, dated with additional signature. On the strecher a gummed label with provenance specifics: Sammlung Friedrich Krupp. After his studies at the academy in Zaragoza and Madrid, the spanish painter Pradilla y Ortiz often resided in Italy during the 1870s. He travelled the countryside and created several landscape pictures and local themes. In 1881 he became the director of the spanish Art Academy in Rome - a position he soon resigned in favour of his travels. His calling to Director of Prado in 1897 - one year after finishing the work at hand - were also soon discarded in favour of his work as painter. His light-flooded and detailed scenes, which he created in Italy, also included our painting. The tangle of sailingmasts in front of the vast coastal landscape shows clear impressionistic tendencies. They form a contrast to the large historical subject-matter for which he was renowned in his life-time and cherished for by the spanish state.
