Die in Düsseldorf ansässige Malerin Emilie Preyer steht mit ihren Blumen- und Früchtestillleben eng in der Tradition Ihres Vaters Johann Wilhelm Preyer, einem der bedeutendsten Stilllebenmaler der Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Schon früh wurde sie von ihm künstlerisch ausgebildet und erhielt im Anschluss an die väterliche Ausbildung privaten Unterricht an der Düsseldorfer Akademie, deren Studium Frauen offiziell verwehrt blieb. So erhielt sie Unterricht vom Historienmaler Heinrich Mücke sowie vom Landschaftsmaler Hans Gude. Schnell avancierte die junge Malerin zur anerkannten Künstlerin und bewies bereits im Alter von 21 Jahren, dass sie die vom Vater erlernten Grundlagen im Hinblick auf Komposition, Maltechnik und Kolorit beherrschte. Studienreisen nach Dresden, Antwerpen sowie Holland bereiteten sie auf die darauffolgenden Akademieausstellungen vor. Neben vorbereitenden Zeichnungen und Aquarellen einzelner Blüten, Blätter und Früchte umfasst das Oeuvre der Malerin hauptsächlich Stillleben mit Blumen oder Früchte. So sind es stets Trauben, Pflaumen, Pfirsiche, zuweilen ein Trinkgefäß oder Nüsse, die in variierender Kombination auf einer Marmorplatte oder einem drapierten Tischtuch im Werk der Künstlerin wiederkehren. Auch das uns vorliegende Gemälde besticht durch ein mit sorgfältiger Detailbehandlung ausgeführtem Arrangement aus Früchten. Auf einer Marmorplatte arrangierte die Künstlerin eine Früchtekomposition, bestehend aus Pfirsichen, Pflaumen und Weintrauben, umgeben von drei detailliert widergegebenen Blättern. Preyer konzentriert sich bei dem feinmalerisch ausgeführten Werk vor allem auf die detailgetreue Wiedergabe der Gegenstände. Besondere Meisterschaft entwickelt sie in der Darstellung der verschiedenen Stofflichkeiten: die kühle Glätte des Marmors im Gegensatz zur pelzigen Haut der Pfirische. The Düsseldorf-based painter Emilie Preyer, with her flower and fruit still lifes, follows closely the tradition of her father Johann Wilhelm Preyer, one of the most important still life painters of the Düsseldorf school of Painting. Early on she was trained by him as an artist and after her father's education she received private lessons at the Düsseldorf Academy, whose studies were officially denied to women. She received lessons from the history painter Heinrich Mücke and the landscape painter Hans Gude. The young painter quickly advanced to a recognised artist and proved at the age of 21 that she had mastered the basics of composition, painting technique and colouring learned from her father. Study trips to Dresden, Antwerp and Holland prepared her for the following academy exhibitions. In addition to preparatory drawings and watercolours of individual blossoms, leaves and fruits, the painter's oeuvre mainly comprises still lifes with flowers or fruits. Thus it is always grapes, plums, peaches, sometimes a drinking vessel or nuts that return in the artist's work in varying combinations on a marble top or a draped tablecloth. The painting offered here also captivates us with a fruit arrangement executed with meticulous attention to detail. The artist arranged a fruit composition consisting of peaches, plums and grapes on a marble top, surrounded by three leaves depicted in detail. In this finely painted work Preyer concentrates above all on the faithful reproduction of the objects. She develops special mastery in the representation of the different materialities: the cold smoothness of the marble in contrast to the furry skin of the peaches.
