Her mother is the poet Susan Howe, her father is the late painter Harvey Quaytman. In keeping with her family background, the boundaries between image and language blur in her work. In the 1980s Quaytman studied painting at Bard College, New York, and then briefly with Daniel Buren and Pontus Hultén in Paris. This was followed by several years as a studio assistant with Dan Graham. In 2001, R. H. Quaytman began a long-term conceptual project, which she continues to this day: She creates most of her paintings according to a certain system, which she calls a book. Each exhibition is a further, so-called "chapter". An unchangeable rule is that each chapter refers to the place where it was first exhibited. In addition to the structural order, a special set of rules also applies to the formal composition of her works: the possible formats are limited to 7 variants, all of which are oriented towards the golden ratio. Quaytman also paints on plywood boards with bevelled edges, all of which are handcrafted. On a carefully applied Gesso primer (chalk and glue), photos and pictures from archives of all kinds are printed in a screen printing process. Almost every chapter also contains one or two oil paintings called captions. The individual chapters contain a multitude of painting styles and motifs that are held together by formal but also narrative relationships. Thus there are many repetitive elements that connect the individual "chapters" with each other. The "chapters" are supplemented by selected single works. The use of geometric patterns, such as the hexagon here, to which this painting owes its title, creates optical and perspective illusions. The artist not only plays with the movement and position of the viewer in the painting itself, but often also in the spatial installation of her exhibitions. Today Rebecca Quaytman has arrived at "Chapter 35" and can already look back on many important international exhibitions. The solo exhibitions in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2010) and the Kunsthalle Basel (2011) as well as her participation in the Venice Biennale (2011), the presentation of the Wolfgang-Hahn Prize in Cologne (2015), and her participation in the Documenta in Kassel (2017) were particularly important. Only last year, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York dedicated a major solo exhibition to her and the Francois Pinault Collection is currently showing an installation in the Punta della Dogana as part of the group exhibition "Luogo e Segni", parallel to this year's Biennale. Ihre Mutter ist die Dichterin Susan Howe, ihr Vater ist der verstorbene Maler Harvey Quaytman. Passend zu ihrer familiären Herkunft verschwimmen in ihrem Werk die Grenzen zwischen Bild und Sprache. Quaytman studierte in den 1980er Jahren u.a. Malerei am Bard College, New York, danach kurz bei Daniel Buren und Pontus Hultén in Paris. Es folgte eine mehrjährige Studioassistenz bei Dan Graham. Im Jahr 2001 beginnt R. H. Quaytman ein konzeptuelles Langzeitprojekt, welches sie bis heute fortführt: Sie legt die meisten Gemälde nach einem bestimmten System an, welches sie selbst als Buch bezeichnet. Dabei ist jede Ausstellung ein weiteres, sogenanntes "Chapter". Eine unveränderliche Regel ist, dass sich jedes Kapitel auf den Ort bezieht, an dem es zum ersten Mal ausgestellt wurde. Neben der strukturellen Ordnung gilt außerdem auch ein besonderes Regelwerk für die formale Beschaffenheit ihrer Werke: die möglichen Formate sind auf 7 Varianten limitiert, die sich alle am Goldenen Schnitt orientierten. Quaytman malt außerdem auf Sperrholzplatten mit angeschrägten Kanten, die alle mit viel Handarbeit bearbeitet werden. Auf eine sorgfältig aufgetragene Gesso-Grundierung (Kreide und Leim) werden im Siebdruckverfahren Fotos und Bilder aus Archiven aller Art gedruckt. Fast jedes Kapitel enthält zudem ein oder zwei Ölgemälde, die als Bildlegende, "Caption", bezeichnet sind. Die einzelnen Kapitel beinhalten eine Vielzahl von Malstilen und Motiven, die durch formale aber auch narrative Beziehungen zusammengehalten werden. So finden sich vielfach repetitive Elemente, die die einzelnen "Chapter" miteinander verbinden. Ergänzt werden die "Chapter" durch ausgewählte alleinstehende Werke. Der Einsatz von geometrischen Mustern, wie hier das Hexagon, dem das vorliegende Gemälde seinen Titel zu verdanken hat, erzeugt optische und perspektivische Illusionen. Dabei spielt die Künstlerin nicht nur im Gemälde selbst sondern oftmals auch in der räumlichen Installation ihrer Ausstellungen mit der Bewegung und Position des Betrachters. Heute ist Rebecca Quaytman bei "Chapter 35" angekommen und kann bereits auf viele bedeutende internationale Ausstellungen zurückblicken. Besonders wichtig waren sicherlich die Einzelausstellungen im San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2010) und der Kunsthalle Basel (2011) sowie die Teilnahme an der Biennale in Venedig (2011), die Verleihung des Wolfgang-Hahn Preises in Köln (2015) sowie die Teilnahme an der Documenta in Kassel (2017). Erst im letzten Jahr widmete das Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York ihr eine große Einzelausstellung und aktuell zeigt die Francois Pinault Collection in der Punta della Dogana eine Installation im Rahmen der Gruppenausstellung "Luogo e Segni", parallel zur diesjährigen Biennale.
