The pastel-colored composition, defined by flowing lines, is part of a series of works created at the end of the 1920s and early 1930s in which the artist portrays the British capital. These works are characterized by a delicate color scheme and the artist’s typical loose brushwork with which he captures an urban landscape full of atmosphere. Raoul Dufy was born in Le Havre in Normandy and first attended the arts school of his hometown before studying at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From there, Dufy transferred as a student to the studio of the French painter Léon Bonnat. Initially influenced by the Impressionists, a painting by Henri Matisse led him then to Fauvism and his works became richer in color. Later he was also inspired by Braque’s Cubism and the works of Cézanne. In 1906 Dufy had his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Berthe Weill in Paris. In addition to his paintings and drawings, he designed fabric patterns for the fashion house Poiret and created ceramics, woodblock prints and designs for tapestries. From 1920, he undertook regular trips to the South of France. Here he painted numerous sailing regattas, horse races and landscapes in luminous colors. For the Paris World Exhibition in 1937, Dufy created the Pavillon de la lumière; in 1952 he received the main prize for painting at the Biennale in Venice. Some of his works were exhibited posthumously at documenta 1 (1955) and documenta III (1964) in Kassel. Die pastelltonige Komposition, bestimmt von fließenden Linien, gehört zu einer Reihe von Werken die Ende der 1920er bis Anfang der 1930er Jahre entstanden sind und in denen der Künstler die britischen Hauptstadt porträtierte. Die Arbeiten kennzeichnen sich durch ein zartes Kolorit und für den Künstler typisch freien Duktus mit denen er die urbane Landschaft stimmungsvoll einfängt. Ab 1920 folgten regelmäßige Reisen nach Südfrankreich. Hier malte er zahlreiche Segelregatten, Pferderennen und Landschaften in leuchtendem Kolorit. Dufy gestaltete für die Pariser Weltausstellung 1937 den Pavillon de la lumière; 1952 erhielt er auf der Biennale in Venedig den Hauptpreis für Malerei. Einige seiner Werke wurden postum auf der documenta 1 (1955) und der documenta III (1964) in Kassel gezeigt. Signatur: signiert unten rechts mit Bleistift „Raoul Dufy“ Rahmen: hinter Glas, ansprechender Holz und Stucco Rahmen Maße: 73,5 x 87,5 cm (Rahmenmaß); 50 x 65,5 cm (Blattmaß) Zustand: das Werk ist in gutem Zustand. Das Blatt ist an den Kanten fest auf Karton kaschiert. Die Ränder sind durch das Passepartout leicht gebräunt. Der linke und untere Rand ist ausgefranst. Am rechten Rand gibt es einen kleinen Einriss (ca. 8mm). Der Rahmen zeigt leichte Gebrauchsspuren.
