Lot 137
REMBRANDT VAN RIJN Abraham's Sacrifice. Etching and drypoint, 1655. 158x133 mm; 6¼x5¼ inches, small margins. Usticke's only state (e), with traces of burr on Abraham's beard and on the upper outline of the angel's wing, consistent with early impressions of this subject. Partial Strasburg Lily watermark (Ash/Fletcher 36; they note a similar watermark on an impression of this subject in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). Ex-collection George Biörklund, author of one of the standard catalogue raisonnés of Rembrandt's etchings (Lugt 1138c, verso). A brilliant, richly-inked, crisp impression of this important etching with strong contrasts and no sign of wear. Bartsch 35; Biörklund 55-B; Hollstein (White and Boon) 35.
