La série présente de nombreux jeux de mots, avec des références ludiques, personnelles, littéraires et d’allitérations. La nature sérielle de ces œuvres et leur petite échelle ont permis à Indiana d'expérimenter des combinaisons de couleurs nouvelles et audacieuses, inédites dans son travail. Dans Polygon : Pentagone, le mot Pentagone apparaît au bas de la composition en blanc et à nouveau autour du cercle, qui indique « Particci Pentagon ». Pour un Américain, la première association du mot « Pentagone » serait avec le siège du ministère de la Défense à Washington, ce qui explique que les couleurs prédominantes de l'œuvre soient le rouge, le blanc et le bleu. Indiana, cependant, a également apporté des associations personnelles au terme, puisque Particci était le nom de son chat. William C. Katz, qui a travaillé avec Indiana pendant de nombreuses années, a écrit dans un essai de 1975 : « This was a Particci painting in more than name, given to a longtime companion, the so-named cat (the shape of whose face is recalled to the artist by the shape of the pentagon. It was to provide tuna fish for his pet in case of the artist's death » Le chat, Particci, apparaîtra plus tard aux côtés d'Indiana dans le film Eat d'Andy Warhol en 1964.
