Robert Indiana, de son vrai nom Robert Clark, prend ce pseudonyme en 1958 pour mieux exprimer l'aspect fondamentalement américain de son œuvre. Part essentielle du mouvement américain “Pop Art“, son “style pop“ représente un langage spécifiquement américain basé sur le sens de la nature moderne, et dépendant du phénomène nord américain ainsi que le décrit le critique d'art Pierre Restany. Indiana participa aux “Nouveaux Réalistes”, l'exposition historique de 1962 à New York, rassemblant les artistes internationaux significatifs dans l'exploration de ce folklore moderne urbain. Son art prit alors un nouveau tournant, utilisant exclusivement des lettres et des chiffres. Il est célèbre pour son “LOVE“, sans conteste l'image du Pop Art la plus connue au monde. Notre sculpture, “Art - Red, Blue“ fut créée en 1972, à partir d'un panneau d'Indiana réalisé pour l'exposition “l'Art Américain depuis 1960“ de l'université d'Art de Princeton en mai 1970. Le grand A triangulaire forme la base de la sculpture, épaulée par l'angle droit du T. Au-dessus, le R s'étend sur la pente du A et ses beaux arrondis sont les seuls qui se détachent des lignes droites de l'ensemble. La silhouette fine donne à l'œuvre un sentiment de légèreté aérienne. Pour réaliser ces parois étroites qui contrastent avec le lettrage imposant de la série des “LOVE“, Indiana utilisa des feuilles de polychrome aluminium. L'œuvre d'Indiana est une étude de la symétrie, de la couleur et de la forme qui envoie également des messages sur la politique, la religion et la nature humaine. “Art - Red, Blue“ donne corps à la notion de “Poèmes Sculpturaux“ de l'artiste. Le rythme et les couleurs des lettres assemblées expriment l'essence même du mot qu'elles représentent. Robert Indiana, born Robert Clark, changed his name in 1958 to better reflect the fundamentally American focus of his work. A central member of the American Pop Art Movement, his “Pop” style embodies “A distinctively American language based on the meaning of modern nature, conditioned by North American phenomenon,” as described by art critic Pierre Restany. Indiana participated in the historic “New Realists” exhibition in New York in 1962, bringing together a significant section of international artists exploring this modern urban folklore. His art then took new directions, exclusively using letters and numbers. He is most famous for his “LOVE” images, undoubtedly the best known Pop Art motif in the world. Our sculpture, “Art - Red, Blue,” was created in 1972, and was based on Indiana's silkscreen poster commissioned for the “American Art Since 1960” exhibition at the Princeton University Art Museum in May 1970. The tall triangular A establishes the base of the sculpture, complimented by the strong angle of T. The R lies along the upper right slope of the A, and its beautiful curves are the only departure from the straight lines of the sculpture. The slender outline lends the work a feeling of airy weightlessness. To achieve the fine-edged effect, a divergence from the imposing lettering of the “LOVE” series, Indiana used thin sheets of polychrome aluminum. Indiana's works are a study of symmetry, color and form while simultaneously addressing elements of politics, religion and the human condition. “Art - Red, Blue” embodies the artist's notion of “sculptural poems”, as the visual vocabulary and the rhythm of the assembled colorful elements express the very essence of the word it represents.
