Dieses Landschaftsbild von 1656 zeigt eine kleine Kuhherde an einer Tränke im Schatten hoher Laubbäume. Die Männer, die die Herde hüten, sind keine Bauern, wie man bei genauerer Betrachtung feststellt, sondern Bewaffnete. Offensichtlich ist die Herde von ihnen geraubt worden, und so trägt das Bild traditionell den Titel „Raubzug". Es ist ein Titel, den man als nicht ganz passend empfinden wird angesichts der friedvollen, pastoralen Stimmung, die die Landschaft evoziert. Die Landschaft repräsentiert den späten Stil Salomon van Ruysdaels, der im Hinblick auf Komposition, Kolorit und Figurendarstellung die "tonale Malerei" der 1630er Jahre ablöst. Die Komposition wird nicht mehr dominiert von einer Diagonalen, die den Blick dynamisch in eine Richtung in die Bildtiefe führt. Stattdessen werden die hohen Bäume und die Tierstaffage so im Bildraum verteilt, dass eine statische, dabei aber rhythmische, ausgewogene Komposition entsteht. Die Darstellung der Menschen und vor allem der Tiere nimmt nun einen größeren Raum ein. Sie sind eigentlich nicht mehr bloße Staffage, sondern rücken ins Zentrum der Komposition. Die Kuhherde an der Tränke ist ein Motiv, das Ruysdael in den 1640er Jahren in seinen Landschaften eingeführt und vor allem in Dorflandschaften verwendet hat (vgl. etwa Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Inv.-Nr. SK-A-2571). Das Kolorit ist heller und wärmer geworden, Ocker- und Brauntöne sowie das leuchtende Blau des Himmels bestimmen die Palette - Stechow hat zu Recht von einem "goldenen Ton" der Landschaften dieser Schaffensperiode gesprochen. This landscape from 1656 depicts cattle at a pond surrounded by trees. The men accompanying the cattle are not peasants but armed soldiers who have stolen the cattle, hence the traditional title of "The Robbery". It is a title however that does not seem to fit the peacful, pastoral atmosphere that the landscape evokes. The landscape evokes the late style of Salomon van Ruysdael and replaces the "tonal painting" of the 1630s in terms of both composition, palette and the depiction of figural staffage. The composition is also no longer dominated by the diagonal. Instead, the tall trees and staffage are spread throughout the picture so that a more static and balanced composition is created. The depiction of the figures and moreover of the animals has become more important, they now play a central role within the composition. The cattle at a pond is a motif that van Ruysdael introduced in the 1640s in his landscapes and that he often used in village landscapes (cf. for example Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. no. SK-A-2571). The palette is brighter and warmer, ochre and brown tones as well as the clear blue of the sky are dominant; Stechow rightly spoke of a "golden palette" of the landscapes of this period.
