"*SAMOKHVALOV, ALEXANDER (1894-1971) A Poster Design of Lenin Arriving in Petrograd signed Collage, watercolour and gouache on paper, laid on board, 68.5 by 91 cm. The celebration of the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution in 1927 was an event of special significance for Soviet Russia. The country's most respected painters and graphic artists were invited to design decorations and propaganda material for this event. Among them was a young student of Petrov-Vodkin, Alexander Samokhvalov. By chance, Samokhvalov himself celebrated an anniversary of his own in the same year, marking a decade of creative work. He had exhibited his work the first time in 1917, after joining the World of Art association. The original sketch for the 1927 poster Lenin Arriving in Petrograd is presented here for auction. The artist follows the style of his early works, and even the colour scheme conforms to Petrov-Vodkin's famous three colours. The consciously formal treatment of the figures and faces of the workers conforms to the monumental poster style of the period.
