Seltener großer Tafelleuchter aus dem Schwanenservice Porzellan, Emaildekor, Vergoldung. Aus fünf Teilen gebrannt und montiert. Bestehend aus einer großen skulpturalen Gruppe auf einem geschweiften Postament, den zentralen Leuchterarm in Form eines Schilfbündels haltend. Drei geschweifte Arme mit vergoldeten Metallmanschetten um eine zentrale Tülle. Das Postament umlegt mit drei plastischen Muscheln, dekoriert mit reliefierten Muscheln und Rocaillenkartuschen um das Allianzwappen Brühl-Kolowrat-Krakowský. Die Gruppe bestehend aus Liebespaar mit antikischer Tuchdraperie, zwei Putti mit Fischschwänzen und einem Delfin. Abgestrichener Boden ohne Marke, Formernummer 44. Abbruch an der vorderen rechten Muschel restauriert, ebenso der Durchbruch im mittleren Schilfbündel. Drei Tüllen verloren, die oberste Tülle ohne Traufschale. Zwei Zwingen ersetzt. Die Vergoldung aufgefrischt. H 51 cm. Meißen, 1739 - 40, das Modell von Johann Joachim Kaendler. Der Auftrag zu einer ersten Geschirrproduktion erfolgte bereits 1734. Kaendler arbeitete an Tellerentwürfen konsequent ab April 1736. Im August 1739 wurde Graf Brühl Oberdirektor der Manufaktur. Im Verlauf dieser Jahre entstand ein Service beeindruckenden Umfangs (über 2000 geschätzte Stücke), das ständig um weitere Formstücke vergrößert wurde. Das Thema der Wasserfauna und des Muschelwerks fand in diesem Zusammenhang zu einem ganz außerordentlichen Höhepunkt; das Service gilt heute als Hauptwerk der barocken Porzellankunst. Es fand seine Aufstellung in Schloss Pförten, heute Brody in Polen, das Heinrich Graf Brühl am 24. März 1740 erwarb. Johann Joachim Kaendler war maßgeblich an der Innenausstattung beteiligt, er baute zwei Kamine aus Porzellan und lieferte rasch "fast 3000 Figuren, Gruppen und sonstige Kostbarkeiten sowie Tausende von Serviceteilen" (Pietsch, 2000, S. 88). Der Siebenjährige Krieg ging nicht spurlos an Schloss und Insassen vorüber. Graf Bühl musste fliehen, die Preußen annektierten das Gebäude als Lazarett, brannte es 1758 nieder, das Dach stürzte ein, das Mobiliar war vernichtet. Am 28. Oktober 1763, kurz nach der Niederlage Sachsens, starb Heinrich Graf Brühl in Dresden. Aus dem Inventar seines Nachlasses wissen wir heute, dass das Service doch in großen Teilen, wenn nicht sogar vollständig, gerettet wurde. Es verblieb in Schloss Pförten, im Besitz der Familie und Nachkommen bis 1945. Als am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs die Rote Armee anrückte, sprengten die Soldaten die Eingänge mit Handgranaten und vernichteten viel Porzellan, große Teile des Services wurden zerschlagen und pulverisiert. Was nicht komplett zerstört wurde, fand sich bis in die 1980er Jahre in den umliegenden Guts- und Bauernhöfen. Der Ort Brody betrieb einen regelrechten Handel mit den noch gut erhaltenen Stücken. Pietsch ist sich nicht sicher, um welchen Eintrag im Arbeitsbericht es sich handelt, denn es wurden zahlreiche Leuchter für das große Service hergestellt. Im Nachlassverzeichnis steht auf S. 311.r. "Fünfzehen Leuchter mit porcellainenen Figuren, zwey und drey tillicht" (Nr. 4004, ibd., S. 265). Möglicherweise handelt es sich um ein Stück aus dieser Position. A large rare Meissen porcelain candlestick from the swan service Fired in five sections and pieced together. Designed as a large sculptural group arranged on an inswept pedastal suppporting the central shaft formed as a bundle of reeds. The three curved arms surrounding the central shaft mounted with gilded collars. The base with three moulded shells at the angles, shellwork relief and rocaille cartouches bearing the Brühl-Kolowrat-Krakowský arms of alliance. The figural group comprising a gentleman in classical drapery, a lady and two putti with the tails of fish, and a dolphin. Unglazed unmarked base, former's no. 44. H 51 cm. 1739 - 40, modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler. Kaendler received the first commission to produce an extensive service in 1734. He consistently worked on designs for plates until April 1736. Count Brühl became director in chief of the manufactory in 1739. It was during this period that this impressive service was created. It encompassed over 2000 pieces in total and was constantly being expanded. The motifs of water fauna and shell work were combined to maximum effect, and the service is today considered the magnum opus of Baroque porcelain design. The service was used in Pförten Palace, located in present day Brody in Poland, which Count Heinrich Brühl purchased on 24th March 1740. Johann Joachim Kaendler was heavily involved in the interior decor of the palace. He designed two porcelain fireplaces and promptly delivered “almost 3000 figures, groups, and other luxurious works alongside thousands of items of crockery” (Pietsch 2000, p. 88). The Seven Years' War did not pass by Pförten Palace unnoticed. Count Brühl was forced to flee, and the Prussian troops annexed the building as a war hospital before burning it down in 1758. The roof collapsed and all of the furniture was destroyed. Count Brühl died in Dresden on 28th October 1763 shortly after Saxony's defeat. Through the inventory of his estate we know that much, if not all, of the service survived the destruction. It remained in Pförten Palace in the estate of Count Brühl's descendants until 1945. During the Red Army's approach at the close of World War II, Russian soldiers used hand grenades to force entrance into the palace, and many items from the service were broken or pulverised. What was not destroyed found its way into local farmhouses and cottages. A lively trade sprung up in the town of Brody for better preserved pieces, and it was via this route that the legendary Swan Service entered the western art market. Literature Cf. cat.
