Die Wandungen dekoriert mit goldgehöhter Lotusblütenranke und ziegelroten Fantasiehieroglyphen. Berlin, KPM, um 1810. Wie das vorhergehende Potpourri mit Hieroglyphenbanderole belegt, findet das Interesse für Ägypten bereits im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert erste Ausdrücke in der Porzellankunst. Eine regelrechte Begeisterung für das ferne Ägypten und seine Geschichte entfacht dann Napoleons Expedition der Jahre 1798 - 1801. Die wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse der Expedition wurden von Dominique-Vivant Denon in der mehrbändigen Description de L'Égypte publiziert und bildeten die Basis der sich entwickelnden Ägyptologie. Nachdem man sich in Sèvres bereits von der neuen Quelle hatte inspirieren lassen, schuf die Modellwerkstatt der KPM 1809 "Ein Egiptisches Caffe und Thè Servis" bestehend aus "Caffe Kanne mit Krokodill Henkel und Eg: Adler Schnaupe, Thépott mit Krokodill Henkel und Zuckerrohr Schnaupe, Zucker Dose glatt mit Deckel und Sphinx Kopf als Knopf (Dieser Knopf kömmt auch zu Caffe und Thépott), Saane Kännchen mit Krokodill Hkl: und glatte Schnaupe". Auch die Vorbilder für den Dekor fand der in Berlin tätige Henri Rivet de la Grange in Denons Werken, so dass das fertige Service bereits 1810 als Sensation auf der Akademieausstellung präsentiert werden konnte. As shown by the potpourri vase in the previous lot, the fascination with Egypt was already finding its first reception in the medium of porcelain in the late 18th century. Napoleon's first expedition to the country in 1789 - 1801 sparked a strong fascination for the exotic land and its history. The research findings of the expedition were published in several volumes by Dominique-Vivant Denon in his “Description de L'Égypte” and formed the basis of the developing field of Egyptology. Following the lead of the Sevres manufactory, KPM began creating models in the Egyptian taste as of 1809, beginning with an Egyptian coffee and tea service comprising a coffee pot with crocodile handles and sugar cane spouts, the sugar box in 'glatt' design with the finial formed as a sphinx (as with those of the coffee and teapots), the cream pot with a crocodile handle and 'glatt' spout.” The Berlin based designer Henri Rivet de la Grange found the inspiration for the decor in Denon's works. The finished service caused a sensation when it was revealed at the academy exhibition in 1810.
