STATUETTE D HIPPOPOTAME L’animal féroce, représenté de manière stylisée, rappelle les représentations en faïence de l’Egypte du Moyen-Empire. Debout, la tête inclinée vers le bas, cet animal possède une symbolique ambivalente oscillante entre le Bien et le Mal. Observant cette créature capable de sortir de l’eau pour aller errer de temps à autres sur Terre, les Égyptiens l’interprètent comme le symbole de la création du monde. Dans l’art sudarabique, les animaux tels que les béliers, ibex, taureaux, chameaux sont souvent représentés— symboles de force et d’autorité, mais aussi représentatifs de la faune de cette région. La figure ici présente témoigne des influences de l’art égyptien sur l’art de la péninsule, conséquence des rapports commerciaux intenses entre l’Egypte et la péninsule sudarabique. Albâtre. The ferocious animal, represented in a stylized manner, recalls the earthenware representations of Middle Kingdom Egypt. Standing with its head tilted downward, this animal has an ambivalent symbolism oscillating between Good and Evil. Observing this creature capable of emerging from the water to wander from time to time on Earth, the Egyptians interpreted it as the symbol of the creation of the world. In South Arabian art, animals such as rams, ibex, bulls, camels are often represented—symbols of strength and authority, but also representative of the animal fauna of this region. The figure present here testifies to the influences of Egyptian art on the art of the peninsula, a consequence of the intense commercial relations between Egypt and the South Arabian peninsula.
