H. 11 cm Art romain, IIe siècle La pièce présente deux visages opposés sculptés dos à dos selon la convention traditionnelle de Janus bifrons ("à deux faces"). Chaque visage, traité en haut-relief, présente des traits masculins matures : front large, yeux enfoncés sous des arcades sourcilières marquées, nez droit, bouche aux lèvres pleines, menton carré. L'un des visages, mieux préservé, affiche une expression sereine et contemplative. Le second visage, davantage érodé, conserve néanmoins la lisibilité de ses traits principaux. La coiffure, organisée en mèches ondulées courtes encadrant le front et les tempes, suit les conventions stylistiques du IIe siècle. Les cheveux et la barbe courte bouclée, traités en volumes arrondis avec des incisions délicates, confèrent dignité et autorité divines aux deux physionomies. La tête est brisée net au niveau du cou, indiquant qu'elle appartenait à un hermès double (pilier surmonté de la tête bicéphale) ou à une statue en pied. A Roman Marble Head of Janus. 2nd century A.D. The piece presents two opposed faces sculpted back-to-back according to the traditional convention of Janus bifrons ("two-faced"). Each face, treated in high relief, displays mature masculine features: broad forehead, deep-set eyes beneath pronounced brow ridges, straight nose, mouth with full lips, square chin. One of the faces, better preserved, displays a serene and contemplative expression. The second face, more eroded, nevertheless preserves the legibility of its principal features. The hairstyle, organized in short undulating locks framing the forehead and temples, follows the stylistic conventions of the 2nd century. The hair and short curled beard, treated in rounded volumes with delicate incisions, confer divine dignity and authority upon the two physiognomies. The head is broken cleanly at the neck level, indicating it belonged to a double herm (pillar surmounted by the bicephalous head) or to a standing statue.
