The Master of Litomerice Altarpiece (active at the beginning of 16th century) THE MASSACRE OF THE INNOCENTS. Bohemia, after 1505. Tempera on wooden board, 57,2x34,6 cm. Framed. Condition restored. A board picture, lately the last discovered work of the Master of Litomerice Altarpiece, was a part of so called Strahov altar in Prague. This altar, nowadays incompletely preserved, was represented by a triptych with the middle part comprising from a board with the Visitation (size 126,3x78,8 cm). Another preserved board, the right wing of the triptych, is double-sided painting. Outer part pictures the Annunciation, the inner the Nativity of Jesus (upper half) and the Flight into Egypt (lower half), both of identical sizes 57,5x35,5 cm. The middle board was borrowed from the National Gallery in 1941 and the wings were from 1950 in the same place as deposits. These parts of the altar were in 1992 returned to the Strahov Premonstratensian Monastery. The board painting offered in our auction with the Massacre of the Innocents theme represented the board of inner side of left wing of the triptych. Outer part of this left wing as well as the second half of the inner side was not preserved. The Master of Litomerice Altarpiece – painter of the end of late Gothic and the beginning of the Renaissance period at the court of King Vladislaus II of Hungary, apart from Benedikt Ried the most significant representative of fine art in Jagiellon Czech. The author of St Wenceslas’s cycle of wall paintings in St Vitus Cathedral and board paintings from so called Litomerice altar, similarly as other altars, Strahov altar, outer wings of altar in chapel in Krivoklát, Holy Trinity altar, paintings with scenes from legend about St. Catherine. Tafelgemälde, bis unlängst das letzte entdeckte Werk des Meisters des Altars von Litomerice. Der Altar von Litomerice war ein Bestandteil des Altars von Strahov-Kloster in Prag. Dieser nicht vollständig erhaltener Altar wurde als ein Triptychon geschaffen, auf dessen Mitteltafel Mariä Heimsuchung dargestellt wurde (126,3x78,8 cm). Weitere erhaltene Tafel – der rechte Flügel – wurde beiderseitig bemalt. Die Außenseite trägt Die Verkündigung des Herrn, die Innenseite Das Geburt Christi (oberer Teil) und Flucht nach Ägypten (unterer Teil), beide Gemälde: 57,5x35,5 cm. Die Mitteltafel wurde in 1942 der Nationalgalerie in Prag geliehen und die Flügel befanden sich seit 1950 als Deponat ebenda. In 1992 wurden diese Teile dem Premonstratenser Kloster in Strahov zurückgegeben. In dieser Auktion angebotenes Gemälde mit Thema des betlehemitischen Kindermords befand sich auf der inneren Seite des linken Triptychonflügels. Die Außenseite des linken Flügels sowie die zweite Hälfte der Innenseite sind nicht erhalten. Meister des Altars von Litomerice war ein böhmischer Maler aus der Zeit des Übergangs der Spätgotik in die Renaissance in Böhmen und der Hofmaler von Wladyslaw Jagiellonczyk. Neben Benedikt Ried der bedeutendster Vertreter der jagellonischen Kunst in Böhmen. Um 1509 wurde er mit der zweiten Ausmalung der Wenzelskapelle im St. Veitsdom (Prag) im Renaissance-Stil beauftragt. Dabei schuf er auch andere Altäre – den Altar aus Strahov, die Außenflügel des Krivoklat-Kapelle-Altars, mehrmals einen Dreifaltigkeitsaltar und Darstellungen aus der Legende über heiligen Katharina.
