[3095] Provenienz: Courtesy der Künstler Die tiefliegenden Augen, die starren, kantigen Konturen sowie die Isolation vom umgebenden Raum lassen das von Thomas Houseago gezeichnete Gesicht wie eine Maske daherkommen, eine Maske, wie wir sie auch von seinen Skulpturen kennen: meist menschliche oder anthropomorphe Figuren, die selten vollplastisch ausgearbeitet sind, sondern bei denen einzelne Partien nur zweidimensional gestaltet sind. Dadurch scheinen die meist aus einfachen Materialien wie Gips und Sperrholz gefertigten Skulpturen wie mitten im Entstehungs- oder Konzeptionsprozess stehen geblieben, wie Zwitterwesen zwischen Entwurfsskizze und Figur. Thomas Houseago ist 1972 in Leeds geboren, er lebt und arbeitet in Los Angeles. Seine Arbeiten wurden auf zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen gezeigt, so auch im Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, am The Modern Institute Glasgow, bei Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin, im MoCa Los Angeles, im Museum Abteiberg Mönchengladbach, im Palazzo Grassi Venedig, im Gemeentemuseum Den Haag und im Rockefeller Center Plaza New York. [3095] Provenienz: Courtesy of the artist With its deep-set eyes, rough-hewn contours, and isolation from the surrounding space, the face drawn by Thomas Houseago looks a lot like one of the masks we encounter in his sculptural works: usually human or anthropomorphic figures that are seldom fully formed in the round but that instead remain partially two dimensional. This makes his sculptures, which usually consist of simple materials like plaster or wallboard, appear frozen in the process of creation or conception, as if caught somewhere be-tween the design sketch and its fully molded execution. Thomas Houseago was born in 1972 in Leeds, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. His works have been exhibited at numerous individual and group shows at prominent venues, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Modern Institute in Glasgow, the Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery in Berlin, MoCa in Los Angeles, the Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach (DE), the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, the Gemeentemuseum in Den Haag and Rockefeller Center Plaza in New York.
