Alessandro Turchi was a leader of Baroque painting in Rome in the first half of the 17th century. His oeuvre includes several hundred paintings on canvas, wood, copper and stone. His works were very popular among Italian and foreign collectors, especially French and Spanish aristocrats, who created important collections in the 17th century. It is not rare that the painter reproduced the same composition on different carriers, sometimes with some slight variations. The preferred themes of Orbetto's works are from the Old and New Testaments, with scenes from the life and passion of Jesus or figures associated with him such as Mary Magdalene. Mary Magdalene was one of his preferred subjects, portrayed dozens of times from 1606 onwards, both in the context of the figure of Christ and as an isolated figure. Here the artist depicts Mary Magdalene at the moment when she renounces earthly goods in order to seek heavenly riches: she undresses and renounces the vanities of the world as well as her jewellery. There is a smaller version of this work on copper (22 x 16 cm) from the 1630s, which is mentioned in the inventory of the renowned French banker and collector Pierre Crozat in 1740. Our painting was also created during this period, and must have been in France in the 18th century, probably in the collection of Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Lebrun, who bought many of Turchi's paintings and resold them in England. In an auction on February 5, 1781 at the Hôtel de Bullion, rue Plâtrière in Paris as "La Madeleine au moment du repentir", the painting is described as the work of Turchi: "Elle est représentée déchirant ses vêtemens; la gorge est découverte, & les cheveux épars. Die bevorzugten Themen von Orbettos Werken stammen aus dem Alten und Neuen Testament, mit Szenen aus dem Leben und der Passion Jesu oder mit ihm verbundenen Figuren wie Maria Magdalena. Maria Magdalena ist die Protagonistin vieler Gemälde, die der Künstler ab 1606 dutzende Male dargestellt hat, sowohl im Kontext der Figur Christi als auch als isolierte Figur. In diesem Gemälde zeigt der Künstler Maria Magdalena in dem Moment, in dem sie auf irdische Güter verzichtet, um himmlische Reichtümer anzustreben: Sie entkleidet sich und verzichtet auf die Eitelkeiten der Welt sowie auf Juwelen. Es gibt eine kleinere Version des vorliegenden Gemäldes auf Kupfer (22 x 16 cm) aus den 1630er, die 1740 im Inventar des renommierten französischen Bankiers und Sammlers Pierre Crozat erwähnt wird. Ebenfalls in der Zeit entstand unser Gemälde, das sich im 18. Jahrhundert auch in Frankreich befunden haben muss, wahrscheinlich in der Sammlung des berühmten Kunstsammlers und -händlers Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Lebrun, der viele Gemälde Turchis kaufte und in England weiterverkaufte. In einer Versteigerung am 5.
