The ZERO artists searched for alternatives to the former art values, especially to the informel and tachistic art. In this context, ZERO designated the ‘zero hour’, an intermediate zone, in which an old state transforms to a new one. The works of the ZERO artists are situated somewhere between painting and sculpture, and are characterized by a minimalist aesthetic. With his ‘painting-objects’ (‘pittura-oggetto’ in Italian), Bonalumi turned painting into three-dimensionality. In doing so, he followed the ideas of his mentor Lucio Fontana. Agostino Bonalumi (1935-2013) Agostino Bonalumi’s education began with a training as a draftsman at the ‘Istituto Tecnico Industriale’ in Vimercate near Milan. Between 1957 and 1958, he visited the studio of Enrico Baj in Milan. There he met Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani, with whom he exhibited several times, and further became a founding member of the magazine and gallery ‘Azimuth’. Influenced by Lucio Fontana and the art informel, he mainly created reliefs and three-dimensional spatial arrangements. In 1960, the founders of the Azimuth gallery separated, Bonalumi and Manzoni join the ZERO-group. The following year, Bonalumi was a co-founder of the group ‘Nouvelle École Européenne’ in Lausanne. Since 1970 the artist also worked as a stage and costume designer for various theaters in Italy. He has participated in a number of national and international exhibitions and biennials. His works are on display in major museum collections, including the Galleria Nazionale d' Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, and the Walker Art Center in Minnesota.
